Job Summary

The Department of Geosciences and Department of Environmental Conservation together with the MS Geography – GIST program at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst seek an instructor for GIS Programming (Python for ArcGIS) for the Spring semester, 2022. The instructor of this course will teach one combined section of this three-credit course (ECO 697K), with in person multi-modal instruction.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Teach ECO 697K (3 credits) during the Spring 2022 semester.
  • This course will cover a number of programming methods and applications in GIS. Beginning in the (familiar) ArcGIS environment, this course will explore fundamentals of programming in Python while learning the Model Builder interface. By exploring basic automation methods of repetitive or complex tasks, this course will also introduce foundations of computer science and computational thinking. While gaining proficiency in Model Builder, this course will expand to other python scripting applications, both within ArcGIS and in other platforms. By exploring many applications of programming to advance GIS analysis and improve workflows, students will build a strong base of knowledge and capacity for future learning and flexibility with programming in GIS.
  • Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in Geography or related field.
  • Experience with Python, ArcPy, and ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Desktop.
  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Prior teaching experience.
  • Additional Details

    This course meets twice per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00pm to 2:15pm. The instructor for this course will be provided the most recent course materials used in the course for use and adaption as they see fit. The expected enrollment for the course is 25 students. The instructor will also have access to office space to hold office hours and, given adequate student demand for the course, will be supported by one ten-hour per week graduate TA for grading and office hour support.

    Work Schedule

    Monday – Friday, 10 hours a week, 25% FTE.
