Assistant Professor - Poultry & Egg Processing Specialist

Anticipated Hiring Range:

Commensurate with Experience

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday (8AM - 5PM)

Job Location:

Raleigh, NC

Department :

Poultry Science

About the Department:

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science is one of only six land-grant academic departments in the U.S. dedicated to poultry science. We produce nearly a third of all poultry science graduates. Our complete career-preparation pipeline – with abundant scholarship opportunities and a 95% job placement rate – ensures that our graduates go out into the world ready to make real impact. Poultry production leads North Carolina’s agricultural economy, producing almost 10% of the nation’s product. Those 800 million broilers, 36 million turkeys and 3 billion eggs bring in $3.9 billion a year. And our department is front and center, fueling innovation and producing its next generation of leaders.

Essential Job Duties:

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) at North Carolina State University is dedicated to supporting the poultry industry, consumers, and other stakeholders. Currently, the PDPS is the only program in the world with a “mini-integration” infrastructure that enables the training of students and the pursuit of research on all aspects of the modern commercial poultry production system. NC State’s PDPS is the only institution that has a Feed Mill Educational Unit, Poultry and Egg Processing Laboratories, Chicken Education Unit, Turkey Education Unit, Poultry Teaching Unit, and Animal and Poultry Waste Management Processing Facility. The PDPS mini-integration system has the unique ability to link issues in any area of the poultry industry to factors in other area(s) of the industry. This provides PDPS with the opportunity to evaluate industry relevant scenarios, collect integrated data, and provide real-world solutions.

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) is seeking a Poultry & Egg Processing and Extension Specialist for Poultry Integrated Systems. This position will be at the Assistant Professor rank. The production of broilers, turkeys, and eggs collectively make up the largest sector (41.8% or over $5 billion) of North Carolina’s total farm income. The NC poultry industry produces over 126,933 jobs and is estimated to contribute $36.6 billion to the state’s GDP.

The key duties of this faculty position are to develop an extension (60%), research (30%), and teaching (10%) program consistent with the needs of the North Carolina commercial poultry industry in the area of poultry & egg processing and with the individual’s area(s) of expertise. The expectation for this faculty member is to provide expertise related to improving the processing of poultry and eggs associated with integrated poultry production. The faculty member will create a program related to muscle and egg physiology, chemistry, and biochemistry to assist the poultry meat and egg processing industry. The successful candidate is also expected to work collaboratively to address preharvest and postharvest challenges and opportunities in the poultry and egg processing arena. This faculty member will also address State and Federal rules and regulations governing the processing of poultry meat and eggs.

The recruitment, hiring, and retention of a diverse workforce are essential to the university’s pursuit of continued excellence and in keeping with its core mission and values. We are seeking candidates from a broad diversity of backgrounds and experiences. The selected candidate will be expected to promote a culture that is welcoming and inclusive of all groups.

Other Responsibilities:

The faculty member is expected to secure extramural funding to support extension/outreach and research activities, and collaborate with other departmental and University faculty to generate a multidisciplinary program. The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. They will also be responsible for mentoring, advising, and directing graduate students. This faculty member will work closely with the commercial poultry and egg industry as well as interact with other departmental, regional and national University faculty, Extension faculty, Extension field faculty, agribusiness colleagues, commodity associations, and representatives of government agencies.

We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.
