Job Details

The Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2022. We seek candidates who specialize in African-American, African and/or African-diasporic musical cultures in subfields such as (but not limited to) ethnomusicology, historical musicology, music theory, music education, composition, or music technology/production. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work is grounded in music scholarship and its intersections with Critical Race Studies, Black Studies and/or Africana Studies.

Swarthmore's music program in the Department of Music and Dance is a vibrant community of performers, creators, and critical thinkers who share a passion for music. The core music faculty currently represent the disciplines of composition, ethnomusicology, historical musicology, music theory, and performance. We have seven faculty-led department ensembles (Chorus, Chinese Music Ensemble, Gamelan, Jazz, Orchestra, Taiko, and Wind Ensemble), in addition to robust programs for private lessons and chamber music. We are housed in the newly renovated Lang Music Building, which includes an acoustically stunning concert hall and the Underhill Music and Dance Library. Our students are often active in many other fields across campus and the wealth of interests and curiosity they bring to music fosters a fresh and exciting atmosphere. Tenure-track faculty members have a 2/2 teaching load, enjoy a generous leave policy, and are eligible to apply for a range of funding to support professional development, teaching, and scholarship.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate effective and dynamic classroom teaching; a broad range of research and teaching interests; a commitment to engaging in cross-departmental collaboration; and a record of scholarly excellence. Commitment to community engagement is welcome, as is evidence of administrative abilities. Performance expertise is not required, but would be of interest.

Application Instructions

Qualified applicants should apply via Interfolio Please provide a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a sample of scholarly work, a sample syllabus, and the names and contact information of three references (please do not submit letters of recommendations at this time, the committee will contact references directly) by December 1, 2021. The cover letter should address the candidate’s interests in teaching in a liberal arts college environment, how they would approach mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, and how the candidate sees their teaching interests complementing and expanding current course offerings in the Music program and across the College. Please address any questions you may have to Molly Floyd ([email protected]), Administrative Coordinator of the Music program.

Located 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia in the borough of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Swarthmore has been co-educational since its founding by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Our Quaker founders believed in the practical application of knowledge for the common good. While Swarthmore is no longer a religious institution, these Quaker roots anchor and inform how Swatties learn and work.

The College offers two degrees: the B.A. in the arts and sciences and the B.S. in engineering. With a student/faculty ratio of 8:1, Swarthmore ensures that its students have close and meaningful contact with their professors.

Swarthmore’s alumni body is small (about 20,000 living alumni) but distinguished. Five Swarthmore graduates have won the Nobel Prize; Swarthmore is also among the top five highest producers of doctorate recipients in the humanities, life sciences, and all sciences combined, with 20 percent of Swarthmore graduates going on to earn a doctorate degree. Some prominent Swarthmore alumni are acclaimed artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby ‘04, novelist Jonathan Franzen ’81, Ashesi University founder Patrick Awuah ’89, Chris Van Hollen ’83, U.S. Senator from Maryland, fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra ’05, and noted sociologist Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot '66.Swarthmore college main
