ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

INTO University of South Florida offers programs for international students on the Tampa campus. The Pathway program, established in 2010, focuses on academic and language support while students complete university courses. The English Language Program provides language instruction for academic purposes. These programs provide extensive support toward academic and social success of the students.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Advising Unit for the Pathway and English Language Programs supports proactive and developmental models of advising that assist students in progressing through their program and on to the greater university community. Advising should be part of an enriching experience for these international students. The candidate will be expected to work on behalf of graduate level and English language students, the INTO USF Pathway and English Language Programs, USF departments and faculty, and for the greater good of the USF community. Passion for student success is a must. The Academic Advisor reports directly to the Assistant Director for the Academic & Learning Support unit. The academic advisor provides support and guidance for the international students in our programs, as well as working with the greater university community to assure our students' needs are met regarding course selection and registration.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide timely and accurate advising to assigned student population, interpreting and adhering to INTO USF/USF advising policies and procedures. Included in these responsibilities are participation in small & large group sessions with students, either face to face or via the web; participating in and providing presentations during student orientations; implementing retention programs that provide the necessary resources to assist students in achieving academic success; providing continuous outreach to academically at-risk students and monitoring progress accordingly; referring students for tutoring and academic support as needed.

Develops and disseminates various advising materials to aid students in reaching their academic and career goals; develops and maintains accurate records of student progress, including advising notes, mid-term grade reports, student course selections, and final grade reports; participates in and assists with a variety of different projects for the program ensuring successful completion of the project(s) in a timely manner.

Facilitate students? course registration each semester, collaborating with various departments to determine appropriate course sequences.

Collaborates closely with other team members on projects and initiatives, including the Testing Advisor on all issues of GMAT/GRE test achievement and student success.

Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:


This position requires a Master's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities; or a Bachelor's degree in those same fields with a minimum of one year of progressively responsible experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

PREFERRED:

Master's degree with at least two years of experience as an academic advisor for a large college or university.
Knowledge and experience with USF policies and procedures.
Experience advising or working with an international student population at the college level
Banner experience

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Knowledge of various database programs such as FileMaker and GradesFirst
Ability to prioritize, dealing with multiple tasks at the same time
Excellent attention to detail
Excellent time management skills
Commitment to the retention of a culturally diverse student body and awareness of other cultures and ethnicities
