The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences encourages applications for a Research Scientist II position. The successful applicant will work with the Greenland Hazards Project, funded through Navigating the New Arctic (NNA), one of the National Science Foundation’s 10 Big Ideas. NNA projects address convergence scientific challenges in the rapidly changing Arctic. This Arctic research is needed to inform the economy, security, and resilience of the Nation, the larger region, and the globe. NNA empowers new research partnerships from local to international scales, diversifies the next generation of Arctic researchers, enhances efforts in formal and informal education, and integrates the co-production of knowledge where appropriate.

At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be- The qualified candidate will provide organizational and environmental communication expertise to the Greenland Hazards Project connecting with Greenlanders, International Scientists, and those who intersect these groups. Overarching responsibilities for this position will include:
- Design a qualitative research program that should be integral to the Greenland Hazards Project.
- Develop, iterate and manage the research program both remotely and in-situ in Greenland.
- Engage with stakeholders, actors, community members, and scientists in Greenland to investigate and critically analyze communication practices through in-depth interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic tours with science team members as well as community members and decision makers in Greenland.
- Participate and contribute to NSF NNA meetings, engaging with other NNA projects as necessary.
- Formulate and produce Internal Review Board applications.
- Present findings at national and international meetings.
- Publish manuscripts and reports to the wider community.
- Provide guidance to web-page design and creation suitable for international users.
- This position will be filled as a Research Scientist II through CIRES at CU Boulder. The position will be eligible for CU Boulder’s generous employee benefits.

- CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
- The initial annual hiring salary range for this position is $75,000.
- Ph.D. required (Communication preferred; other related fields may be considered).
- A passport is required as well as the ability for frequent travel to Greenland will be necessary.
- Expertise in designing, coordinating, and managing qualitative research projects.
- Specializes in qualitative research, specifically in-depth interviews, ethnographic tours, participant observation, and media analysis.
- Ability and availability to participate in frequent travel to Greenland.
- Strong demonstratable knowledge of communication theory, professional identity making, participatory decision-making processes, the co-production of knowledge, and barriers to collaboration between scientists and local community members.
- Ability to work well in interdisciplinary teams and to build strong interpersonal relationships that facilitate cross-team knowledge sharing.
- Strong communication skills, demonstrated through peer-reviewed articles and oral presentations.
- Experience as patient, empathic discussion leader, and moderator for small and large groups of adult learners.
- Ideally the candidate will have extensive experience (10+ years) leading community-based research design and project management in academic and nonprofit settings.
- Scholar and practitioner with knowledge of critical-cultural organizational and environmental communication.
- Research interests in ecological and occupational identity and nature-culture interactions in the context of environmental contestations.
- Invested in exploring eco-social relations and the implications of environmental change and conflict in transitioning communities.
