Program Information

The Alliance for Identity-Inclusive Computing Education (AiiCE) (https://identityincs.org/) aims to increase the entry, retention, and course/degree completion rates of high-school and undergraduate students from groups that are historically underrepresented in computing through evidence-based, identity-inclusive interventions. AIICE is founded upon evidence that student-focused (and often deficit-based) strategies do not adequately address institutional cultures, policies, and practices that have marginalized people from non-dominant identities.

Job Description Summary

The Alliance seeks candidates for a postdoctoral position at the intersection of identity and computing/STEM. The position is part of a national effort to broaden participation in computing through identity-inclusive strategies. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and researchers from Duke University, the University of Oregon, Mount Holyoke College, the Kapor Center, Constellations Center for Equity in Computing at Georgia Tech, ABET/CSAB, Reboot Representation, and the Center for Inclusive Computing.

Duties

  1. Design and implement research protocols.
  2. Complete thorough and comprehensive literature reviews, as appropriate.
  3. Write papers for peer review.
  4. Present research findings.
  5. Lead/mentor student researchers.
  6. Ensure data are collected accurately, analyzed rigorously, and adhere to agency and IRB-specific data-use/management protocols.

Qualifications

This position demands a self-motivated, organized, deadline-oriented, and independent researcher who meets the following requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. with completion prior to start date.
  2. Demonstrated research experience in one of the following areas:
    • Computing/STEM education research (especially justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion)
    • Identity (race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexuality, or class)
  3. Demonstrated experience performing quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods research.
  4. Demonstrated statistical proficiency.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency using data analysis software.
  6. Demonstrated alignment with the goals of AiiCE.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
  8. Evidence of research experience in the aforementioned areas, as demonstrated by publications, works in progress, and/or presentations.
  9. Currently eligible to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated experience in survey design, (semi-)structured interviews, and using coding software (e.g., NVivo, MaxQDA, etc.).
  2. Demonstrated potential to mentor students from diverse backgrounds.

This position is for two (2) years, with the possibility of a third-year renewal based on performance. A background check will be required of the successful candidate.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
