Reporting to the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees and the Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee, the Director of Internal Audit directs and manages the university’s internal audit activities and ensures that Internal Audit is regarded as a value-added function by the Audit and Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, and university management. This individual is responsible for developing, planning, organizing, and directing the university’s internal auditing program based on overall risk assessments and presenting an annual audit plan for input, review, and approval by the Audit and Finance Committee. The Director of Internal Audit reviews and examines the fiscal and operational records, processes, systems, procedures, and internal controls; and performs economy and efficiency audits and special analyses in a technologically rich environment. Following these reviews, written audit reports including appropriate recommendations for improvements are submitted to the Audit and Finance Committee. To ensure independence and objectivity, the Director of Internal Audit has a direct reporting line to the Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. This position supervises the Senior Supervising Internal Auditor and two staff Internal Auditors; provides work assignments, guidance, training and technical assistance; and, oversees the department’s budget. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute annual detailed audit plan and programs based on specific risk assessments. Conduct interviews and chart workflows for significant processes; analyze processes and apply critical thinking skills to evaluate risks and controls; and, assess processes efficiently. 
  • Provide leadership in implementing “best practices” for university auditing and serve as a strategic partner in risk assessment and management with key stakeholders across the university.
  • Present the results of internal audits to management and the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Serve as an internal advisor to assist management in enhancing governance processes, risk management processes, and the university’s internal control environment.
  • Review and evaluate existing internal controls to ensure fiscal accountability and compliance with appropriate federal and state laws, university policies and procedures, and regulations.
  • Perform advisory or consulting services as requested by management.
  • Initiate, conduct, supervise and coordinate investigations designed to detect, deter, and prevent fraud, misconduct and other abuses.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of management’s response for corrective action and perform necessary follow-up procedures to determine if corrective action has been implemented.
  • Establish audit priorities and assign appropriate resources and time frames for completion.

Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration or similar field is required and certification as a CIA, and/or CPA, and/or CISA is preferred.
  • A minimum of eight years’ experience in internal auditing, public accounting, or government accounting.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Experience directly managing staff and/or supervising the work of other colleagues is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices, internal auditing standards and audit techniques.
  • Unquestioned integrity and strong business ethics.
  • Intellectual maturity and well-rounded leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of industry “Best Practices” in internal audit operations and demonstrated familiarity with professional standards.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with a strong systems orientation. This includes the ability to conceptualize, analyze, capture, and process the nuances of inter-dependent business processes, functions, and resources in a university setting and thoughtfully characterize risk.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills represented by strategic and completely unbiased communication with university management and the Audit and Finance Committee.
  • The ability to achieve an appropriate balance between the independence of the internal auditor’s role with the need to work collaboratively with other members of the university community.
  • A proven ability to lead key initiatives and work collaboratively to achieve objectives. This will include identifying and achieving organizational focus on key priorities, providing clear direction, and active communication.
  • Exceptional judgement and the ability to handle confidential and/or potentially sensitive matters with the utmost discretion.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
