Position Summary

The Department of Theatre seeks to hire a Visiting Guest Artist with the title of Assistant Professor-Fixed Term in the field of Acting—position to begin February 21, 2022 through March 26, 2022 (these dates include MSU’s spring break 3/7-3/11). Housing is included. The ideal candidate is a global majority educator and artist who is passionate about classical theatre, the Michael Chekhov Technique, and incorporating inclusive pedagogies in the classroom.

Principal duties include part-time coverage of one graduate and one undergraduate acting course during a faculty member’s temporary absence. The faculty member will work with the successful candidate to create the curricula for the classes being covered. The first course is a 6 hours/week undergraduate course titled “Classical Acting,” which will be focused primarily on the partnering of Shakespearean texts with tools from the Michael Chekhov technique. The second course is a 6 hours/week graduate course exploring the Michael Chekhov Technique. In addition to teaching two classes, the candidate will lead two special two-hour programs based on the candidate’s expertise for the Department during their time at MSU (supplemental workshop, lecture, or creative project). Candidates will be expected to follow the protocol and expectations of teaching responsibilities within the Department of Theatre.

The preferred candidate will have experience teaching and/or performing classical texts including Shakespeare, experience teaching the Michael Chekhov Technique, and evidence of commitment to antiracist and inclusive pedagogy in theatrical practice.

Required Degree

Doctorate -MFA in Theatre

Minimum Requirements
  • MFA in Theatre or equivalent professional experience
  • Professional experience in acting; recent experience preferred
  • Evidence of commitment to antiracist and inclusive pedagogy in theatrical practice
Desired Qualifications
  • 3 or more years of teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Experience in teaching the Michael Chekhov Technique.
  • Experience teaching and/or performing classical texts including Shakespeare.
