Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Dean’s Office provides oversight for the Adams School of Dentistry and serves as the liaison to the University, citizens, alumni and friends.

Position Summary:

The Data Analyst reports directly to the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and provides data collection, analysis, and reporting support for the Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD). The Data Analyst conducts data collection, statistical analysis, visualization development, and report creation (including use of SAS, SQL, R, Tableau, Excel, etc.) in the areas of academics, patient care, discovery and innovation, outreach, and administrative support services. The core responsibility for the Data Analyst is to create computer programs, databases, and data analyses and visualizations independently and reliably in support of the key needs of ASOD units and decision makers. Primary duties include collection, validation, and reporting of school data; development and maintenance of data infrastructures to support reporting; and regular data extraction, manipulation, analysis, visualization and interpretation of results using complex programming and statistical tools.

The Data Analyst provides expertise in the creation of decision support tools and reports to support data visualizations and data analysis. The Data Analyst works with members of the ASOD community to define data analytic needs and reporting requirements. S/he designs, codes, tests, extracts data, and aggregates results from queries to generate complex analyses, reports, dashboards, and visualizations that support decision-making and planning at all levels of the ASOD. The Data Analyst will collaborate with the ASOD Office of Computing and Information Systems (IT) team as needed. The Data Analyst also supports survey development, leads the analysis and reporting of survey research data and benchmarks, and reports on institutional research data including comparison to other similar institutions. S/he will assist the Director of Institutional Effectiveness with data management and analysis, project coordination, documentation, and special projects as requested. S/he will support the Director of Institutional Effectiveness in the evaluation of School and unit/program performance for the purposes of outcomes assessment, institutional benchmarking, and accreditation. The Data Analyst also assures the accuracy and integrity of data and assists in support and training with end users to maximize their ability to use the decision support system and/or dashboards. S/he will understand and maintain expertise in data analysis and visualization through professional development and will consult with school leadership on these areas of expertise. The Data Analyst will also serve on ASOD and/or UNC committees as appropriate as a representative of the ASOD Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Master’s or Bachelors and 0-2 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Master’s degree in information science, statistics, computer science, business administration, or other related discipline. For candidates demonstrating comparable professional-level experience, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Experience with querying data systems. Experience in analysis and reporting of educational data, with software such as SAS, SQL, R, Tableau, and Excel. Experience in survey design and development in software, such as Qualtrics. Experience with data visualization software, such as Tableau. Previous work experience in higher education. This position must be able to maintain privacy of confidential or sensitive data in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA, and support compliance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards and other regulations.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
