Agriculture in today’s world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and PhD degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at North Carolina State University invites qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor Faculty position in applied microeconomics. This position will be split 50% Academic Programs (Teaching) and 50% Research. This position will develop an innovative research and teaching program centered on demand, marketing, and policy in the agricultural and food sectors. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, consumer demand, consumer behavior, human nutrition and health, food safety, food supply chains and risk, new product development, labeling, demand systems, price analysis and price transmission.

The successful candidate’s research program should complement the current expertise among the ARE faculty and, where appropriate, the faculty in the department of Economics in the Poole College of Management (PCOM). The incumbent will teach an undergraduate course and/or a graduate level course in the joint ARE-Economics graduate program.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Ph.D. degree in economics, agricultural economics, doctorate in business administration (DBA), or a related field.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the active pursuit of scholarship consistent with the land-grant mission leading to refereed publications in reputable general economics and field journals and effective extramural funding.
  • Commitment to effective and enthusiastic teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Evidence of excellent quantitative and computing skills, willingness to pursue collaborative research, and excellent verbal and written communication ability.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some academic, government or private sector work experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in discrete choice and consumer preference modeling, scanner and product level data analysis, structural models of demand and supply, models of competition, contracting and bargaining in vertical markets.
  • Demonstrated expertise in behavioral/experimental research in food and agriculture such as consumer food choices and farm inputs decision making.
