Nature of Work

The Colorado School of Public Health, Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (DBI) and its partner Center, the Center for Innovative Design and Analysis (CIDA) have multiple openings for full time Research Associates. This is a doctoral level team science position and similar to team science track faculty positions at other institutions. CIDA is a campus wide analytics center charged with expanding the analytics expertise and research for the Anschutz Medical Campus. This person in this position will join over two dozen master’s and PhD trained faculty in CIDA and over three-dozen faculty and research personnel in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics. CIDA is committed to applying strategies to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in research, public health practice and teaching.

 

The work for this position is split between consulting, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design Program, and major collaborative research groups. The Research Associate is a key research-faculty position in the Department. A Research Associate is expected to provide high-level, professional and scientifically rigorous biostatistics/data science consulting and collaboration support to biomedical researchers at CU Anschutz. They are expected to become a significant contributor in their collaborations, and partner to define and shape the research direction of the team. A person in this position works with investigators on the design and analytical aspects of the research process, including: design of new studies, structuring data collection systems, the application of state-of-the-art methodologies, analyses, and preparation of abstracts, oral and poster presentations, and scientific manuscripts. Depending on the particular collaborations interesting biostatistics/data science research opportunities may arise; although it is not the emphasis of the position. Working on these projects will involve the coding and implementation of genomic pipelines and computational workflows, data management, statistical analysis, data visualization, and possible method exploration and development.

 

The collaboration needs for this position are focused on ‘omics data sets including genetics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, metabolomics, microbiome and others, in addition to the integration of multi-‘omics data or with other high dimensional data. The individual will be presented with a mix of standard applications and new and challenging data requiring use of state-of-the-art methodologies and novel solutions. The desire to learn continuously and try new analytic approaches are key features of all faculty in CIDA.

Supervision Received

The OMICS Research Associate will be supervised by the CIDA Director.

 

Supervision Exercised

This position will have supervisory responsibilities over the data science faculty and students in CIDA.

 

Examples of Work Performed

The Research Associate will work independently with investigators spanning the spectrum of biomedical and public health research on an academic health sciences campus. This individual will provide the bioinformatics/biostatistical/data science expertise for projects with ‘omics data, including leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, bioinformatics, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines. The successful candidate will participate in studies that use high-throughput bulk gene expression and single-cell expression data to explore the biological basis of disease. In addition, this person should have expertise in genetics and other omics data types to help further define pathways implicated in disease susceptibility and severity.  The Research Associate will be expected to develop leadership roles in their collaborations and become known for their areas of expertise across the campus and region.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Data management, data pre-processing, exploratory data analysis, modeling, and downstream analysis of ‘omics data sets

• Strong programming skills in multiple languages including R, Python, or others.

• Experience with bioinformatics software tools

• Experience with high-performance computing environments.

• An innate desire to learn new methods and technologies in ‘omics research, and adapt to the demands of a fast paced and ever-evolving research environment.

• Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles relevant in medical research.

• Evidence of an ability to conduct methods research or investigate the validity of new methods in their area of study.

• Evidence of developing data analysis techniques or pipelines and applying them in new situations.

• Ability to analyze and solve complex problems and apply quantitative analytical approaches.

• Good organizational skills across individual projects, managing own workload.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Positive attitude and the ability to work with a variety of biomedical investigators and colleagues.

• Excellent problem-solving skills.

• Ability to contribute to the growth and development of the CIDA, their collaboration and the Department.

• Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to be culturally responsive and exercise cultural humility while communicating appropriately and effectively with diverse audiences

• Demonstrated commitment to promoting health equity and/or health justice.

Salary and Benefits

The salary / salary range for this position has been established at $93,000 to $110,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, rank, internal equity, experience, education, and area of expertise. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

• PhD degree in biostatistics, statistics, biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics or related fields at the start date of the position.

• 1 year of consulting/collaborative experience in their graduate training or in a post-doctoral position in ‘omics research.

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in statistical software R, python or equivalent

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in at least one ‘omics platform

• The ability to work independently on data analysis and research

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with multiple ‘omics platforms

• 2+ years of consulting/collaborative research experience

• Evidence of independent or collaborative research through publications.

• Experience in giving presentations and seminars at scientific meetings

• Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the data analytic elements of clinical or translational research projects.

• Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the computational elements of multiple research projects simultaneously.

• Or Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
