Position Summary:

The role of the GIS Research Associate is to support NEMAC’s ongoing project with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The focus of this project is the development of regional coastal resilience assessments for the United States. Responsibilities primarily include 1) data research, collection, and management, 2) geoprocessing and analysis, 3) basic spatial modeling, 4) creating map products, and 5) assisting with final reporting and data dissemination. The GIS Research Associate will also be required to attend project meetings with NEMAC staff and the client in order to complete the work. Responsibilities and Duties:
● Identify, manage, analyze, and document spatial data related to coastal climate resilience.● Conduct advanced spatial analysis, including raster-based analysis.● Contribute to cartographic maps and map products, including online viewers and text-based documents.● Contribute to presentation of modeling results in written and presentation format.● Provide technical GIS support to the GIS team for the NFWF project.● Responsible for identification, retrieval, management, and transfer of a wide range of GIS spatial and tabular data from local, state, federal, and many other organizations.● Assist with initial data processing, geoprocessing, and analysis of aforementioned data.● Assist with data modeling and when necessary, GIS automation.● Assist in creating a series of draft, preliminary, and final cartographic maps and map products.● Assist in writing final reports and disseminating final data packages.● Participates in project conference calls and other meetings.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills:

● Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or closely related field with 2-5 years of experience.● Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Desktop software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap) or other Desktop GIS software such as QGIS.● Knowledge of basic GIS concepts and principles: data management, geoprocessing and analysis, cartographic mapping.● A successful candidate will be a self-starter and a highly motivated individual who is passionate about applying environmental science with geospatial technologies to solve complex issues related to our nation’s coastal environment. ● Comfortable with raster-based modeling.● Comfortable with using Google Docs and Google Drive.● Proficiency in a Windows PC operating environment.● Should be able to work well individually to solve problems and answer questions, but also be able to work well within a team environment with other GIS staff working on the project.● Should be comfortable working in a remote environment, with the possibility of daily remote meetings and working sessions using Google Meets and/or Zoom.● Must also be able to handle multiple tasks for the project simultaneously.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

● Master’s Degree ● Completion of a GIS Certificate (can be used to offset experience and/or skills).● Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, including managing content, publishing data and services, creating web maps, and creating story maps.● Familiarity with basic computer programming (i.e. Python) and scripting. ● Strong verbal and oral communication skills, including technical reporting and scientific writing.● Domain knowledge of one or more of the following subject areas is a major plus: environmental and coastal science, natural resource management, coastal hazard data, climate related threats.● Experience presenting technical and scientific methods and results in written and presentation format.

Work Schedule and Hours:

● This position is a temporary position, paid on an hourly basis and is paid bi-monthly. ● As with all NEMAC staff positions, this position is contingent upon funding. Continued funding for this position will be evaluated on an annual basis. ● Remote/hybrid work allowed; if fully remote then a willingness to travel to Asheville several times a year for meetings is required. ● Typical hours are Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. eastern time. Occasional work on evenings and weekends may be needed based on departmental needs.
