The School of Human Ecology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Recreation.

Within this setting, the Recreation and Tourism Management program consists of three full time faculty members teaching content in two emphasis areas: Outdoor Recreation and Tourism and Community Leisure Services. The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Recreation, an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management, an Accelerated Bachelor's to Master's in Public Administration (MPA), and a minor in Recreation & Tourism Management. The program has been continuously accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT) since 1983.

Position Description. Reporting to the School Chair, the Assistant Professor of Recreation will support and contribute to the Recreation and Tourism Management undergraduate degree program within the School of Human Ecology. The ability to contribute to major core course offerings while enhancing and expanding curriculum within tourism and event management, youth development, or intersections between recreation and public health is preferred. Candidates with expertise in other areas of the field will also be considered. Responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate courses, engagement in scholarly and creative activities, and active participation in university and professional service. The position is a 10-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctoral degree from an accredited university in Recreation Management, Tourism Management, Leisure Studies, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in recreation and tourism management, by August 1, 2022.

Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence via a teaching demonstration).

Willingness to develop experiential learning opportunities with appropriate professional organizations.

Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.

Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.

Strong interpersonal communication skills with students, staff and colleagues, both orally and in writing.

Technology literacy and a commitment to integrate technology into teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of college/university teaching experience.

Experience with the development and delivery of academic courses in both online and traditional formats.

Experience mentoring students and supervising interns.

Full-time work experience in outdoor recreation, tourism, and/or community leisure services.

Certificates and other professional development activities relevant to areas of expertise (e.g., Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP); Certified Interpretive Trainer (CIT); ACCT Challenge Course Practitioner or Challenge Course Manager; Wilderness EMT; Wilderness First Responder (WFR)).

Conditions of Employment:

Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

All work for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.

Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus
