The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry.

Within this setting, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is housed in the College of Science and Mathematics. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers two ACS certified Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biochemistry as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. The department also offers a Master of Science in Applied Physical Science with concentrations in pharmaceutical science, materials and coatings science, and environmental science. The Department is rapidly increasing its externally funded research activities and is housed in a 47,000 square foot facility containing modern classrooms with dedicated teaching and research laboratories on the Statesboro campus and a similar facility on the Armstrong (Savannah) campus. The department is comprised of 45 faculty with 36 in the professor track and 9 in the lecturer track as well as 4 full time staff. The faculty focuses on high quality, student-centered undergraduate and graduate education that prepares students for careers in the chemical industry as well as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and education. The department is committed to both graduate and undergraduate research with the majority of undergraduate biochemistry and chemistry majors participating, thus furthering their preparedness for post-baccalaureate studies in many fields. Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Assistant Professor position requires teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities. The position is a 10-month tenure track appointment, with a salary that is both competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry (with a materials chemistry emphasis), or a closely related field, by August 1, 2022.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence in the undergraduate and graduate classroom, as well as the ability to teach physical chemistry.
  • Potential for developing an externally funded research program in the area of materials chemistry that fully involves and engages both graduate and undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates with research specialization in solid state/semiconductor chemistry.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Teaching experience

    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
  • All work for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus.
  • Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
