Assistant Director of Legal Resources

Reporting to the Executive Director of Legal Resources, the Assistant Director of Legal Resources will have three main areas of responsibility:

  1. They will develop and manage the Association’s online courses
  2. Manage the Association’s online legal resources library
  3. Plan in-person educational programs. The Assistant Director of Legal Resources will also implement selected other NACUA educational programming and other types of electronic resources. The Assistant Director will have meaningful opportunity to work very closely with members to bring these programs to fruition.

NACUA Overview

Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., NACUA is a membership-based, non-profit organization that serves colleges and universities by assisting higher education attorneys in representing and advising their client institutions. The Association’s membership base is comprised of more than 4,800 attorney representatives who represent 1,800 institutional campuses. In-house counsel, attorneys in private practice, attorneys general, and other legal specialists, public and private non-profit institutions, and a vast array of accredited institutions rely on NACUA as a primary source of information on higher education law and legal issues affecting colleges and universities. NACUA and its members are committed to practicing and promoting the core values of quality, collegiality, diversity, inclusiveness and respect. NACUA plays an important role in the continuing legal education of university counsel. The Association produces a multitude of legal resources, offers continuing legal education programming, maintains a listserv (NACUANET) and a variety of member-only web-based resource pages. Additionally, NACUA created the Higher Education Compliance Alliance, a centralized online repository of information and resources for compliance with federal laws and regulations. The Association also operates a clearinghouse through which member attorneys are able to post questions and share resources and knowledge on current legal concerns and interests. Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Manage online legal resources for members and assist in the planning and development of potential new resources incorporating new technologies.
  • Work with the Director of Technology Services to develop innovative ways to provide resources to members that will be helpful and attractive to members and result in efficient use of staff and volunteer time.
  • Develop (with course instructors) and manage NACUA online courses. Review course content to assure it is current, and plan and participate in online course seminars.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Develop and implement other selected NACUA continuing legal education programming, including CLE workshops, webinars, briefings, and General Counsel Roundtables.
  • Manage and maintain resources provided on the Higher Education Compliance Alliance (HECA) website.
  • As assigned, assist in collaborative programming efforts between NACUA and other higher education associations and on outreach to governmental agencies regarding issues of interest to NACUA members.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the NACUA Annual Conference and other educational initiatives.
  • Assist in monitoring the Association’s listserv, NACUANET.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Committee on Legal Resources Library and other groups as needed.
  • Participate in weekly meetings of the NACUA staff responsible for implementing the Annual Conference, CLE workshops and other NACUA programming.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Executive Director of Legal Resources, other Assistant Directors, and the Legal Resources Assistant.
  • Participate in staff leadership meetings and work with fellow leaders to implement the annual work plan of the Association.
  • Work on special projects and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Legal Resources.

Qualifications & Skills

Education:  

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed in good standing to practice law in any state.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience obtained as a practicing attorney and/or working with educational programming.
  • Excellent legal research, analysis and writing skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments effectively while working on multiple and competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficient in using standard office technology applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior educational programming experience, especially legal education programming or experience with the planning and implementation of live and online professional education programming.
  • Familiarity with higher education legal issues.
  • Knowledge of technology used in legal education programming.

Personal Traits and Attributes:

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong interest in and experience using technology that can be used to help NACUA, its member lawyers and others access legal resources efficiently.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and function successfully in a team-oriented, fast-paced work environment with both members and staff.
  • Hands-on, “roll up your sleeves” attitude.
  • Passion and excitement for higher education and continuing education.
