Position Summary

The University Police Department (UPD) at SDSU endeavors to promote a safe environment in a manner that is fair, transparent, and respectful. Under the general supervision of the chief of police, the captain administers, directs and reviews the work of sworn and civilian personnel performing law enforcement and support activities in the University Police Department. The captain provides oversight and direction to all aspects of Department operations, and serves as the second-in-command. Three lieutenants report to the captain, one directs patrol operations, the second directs Investigations, and the third directs administrative operations and special events. The incumbent will perform advanced law enforcement and supervisory/administrative work involving the prevention, detection and investigation of criminal acts, the apprehension and arrest of law violators, and the safeguarding of lives and property. The captain will also focus on strategic planning in support of projected exponential Department growth over the next several years.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduation from a certified California POST academy, or possession of POST waiver
  • 10 years of sworn law enforcement experience, with at least six years of progressively responsible experience at the level of sergeant and above, or a combination of experience and education that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
  • POST Management Certificate, or ability to obtain upon appointment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from FBINA or Command College
  • Current or recent experience as a Police Captain
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing community oriented policing projects to solve complex community issues
  • Demonstrated ability to bring creative, innovative ideas to bear in addressing personnel, deployment and general policing challenges
  • Experience managing budgets, preferably with specific experience related to maintaining overtime costs, and training needs
  • Experience in strategic planning and developing organizational priorities

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports and community presentations

  • Proficiency in reviewing and analyzing systems and processes in an effort to adhere to best practices
  • Ability to manage and lead many projects and issues simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and carry a heavy caseload requiring project management skills and attention to detail in all work

Licenses and Certifications Required

Possession of a Class C or higher California driver's license at the time of appointment and satisfactory driving record is required.

Compensation and Benefits

San Diego State University will offer a competitive salary based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. Starting salary is not expected to exceed $13,125 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
