Your Opportunity:

The University of Toronto Electric Vehicle Research Centre (UTEV) is seeking a dynamic and independent Research Associate to manage and conduct research in the area of Vehicle Electrification. The researcher will take a leadership role to fulfill the research goals of the principal investigator (PI). Specifically, research at UTEV focuses upon identifying new system topologies to substantially increase efficiency and safety of electric vehicle powertrains and electric vehicle charging systems.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of power electronic systems (both software and hardware development).
  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers to develop aforementioned power electronic systems.
  • Project research support for graduate students: monitor technical progress of graduate students and support the achievement of research project objectives.
  • Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals.
  • Work with PIs and graduate students to track research progress/milestones, organize research project reviews with internal UTEV staff and external UTEV partners.
  • Collaborate with national and international sponsors to facilitate technology transfer: coordinate IP discussions with the UofT Innovations and Partnerships Office (IPO), support the process of knowledge transfer and commercialization of research developments.
  • Grant / Invention disclosure / Patent writing: support the PI in development and submission of research grant applications. Support in preparation of project reports for sponsors. Support in the preparation and writing of invention disclosures and patent filings.
  • The Research Associate is expected to publish both at conferences and in journals.
  • Monitor global EV developments - Product and Technology Watch / New Developments.


Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Area of specialization must be in power electronics and / or electric drives.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership/organization as a team leader in R&D projects.
  • Demonstrated research excellence in the area of power electronics, preferably with strong publication record in premier power electronics venues.
  • Demonstrated experience with topologies, control and modulation of power electronic converters systems, ideally with focus on electric vehicle and/or other traction applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with efficiency calculations, optimization techniques, real-time control, thermal design, gate driver design, and addressing practical implementation challenges.
  • Extensive experience in design and prototyping and debugging of medium power, power electronic converter systems (above 10kW).
  • Experience with printed circuit board design (e.g. Altium).
  • Familiarity with SAE/IEC/UL standards related to the deployment of power electronic converters in electric vehicles is a major asset.
  • Advanced skills with the following analysis and design tools: PLECS, MATLAB, and Simulink.
  • Familiarity with the modelling and control of interior and surface permanent magnet traction motors.
  • Advanced skills in embedded software design for DSPs (C/C++) and FPGAs (Altera or Xilinx).
  • Proficient with MS Office and Linux.
  • Experience with ANSYS Maxwell or comparable Finite Element tools is an asset.
