The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Applied Linguistics/Language Education, with a focus on equity and inclusion. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter.
Candidates must have earned a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, or a closely related field (such as Literacy Education, Linguistic Anthropology or Psycholinguistics) by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching with a strong portfolio in linguistic diversity and language/literacies education from an international and/or cross-cultural perspective. The successful candidate will have a scholarly focus that recognizes the interconnectedness of languages and literacies, and which directly addresses positive change for racialized, minoritized, and/or immigrant language users. We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing strengths in CTL’s Language and Literacies Education (LLE) program. LLE faculty comprise a community of scholars and educators who embrace multi/plurilingualism and multiliteracies, and who share an explicit commitment to non-deficit framings of language education, particularly in the case of racially and linguistically minoritized language users, learners, and educators. To that end, we seek a colleague whose research and teaching will enhance our efforts to build equitable and just educational and professional environments for speakers and learners from diverse backgrounds.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must demonstrate involvement in the development and management of large-scale research projects or collaborations addressing issues relating to one or more of the following: multilingual language or literacies acquisition, linguistic and cultural diversity and mobility, additional language assessment, writing in an additional language, language education and language rights, language revitalization, and the changes that these growing movements imply globally.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses and supervise students in LLE graduate degree programs (MA, MEd, and PhD). The ability to contribute to other OISE programs, or collaborative specializations in which LLE participates, would be an asset. The demonstrated ability to teach and work effectively in an English-language work environment is essential. The ability to teach in French, knowledge of additional languages, and international teaching experience would all be assets for this position. The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all of our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences. Other responsibilities of the position include service to CTL and to OISE, and it is expected that the successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings.
Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, and will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted with the application, as well as strong letters of reference.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
