Assistant Director of Grant Development - College of Arts and Sciences 

Reghular, Full-time, Market Range 12

Applications are currently being solicited for a Grants Writer to work with researchers affiliated with the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. We are a community of researchers focused on all aspects of quantitative modeling in the life sciences.

The work will focus on creating the strategic vision for expanding our opportunities for funding interdisciplinary research among disciplinary researchers. The person in this role will identify and lead writing the NIMBioS proposals to funding opportunities in the area of Mathematical Life Sciences Research. Provides leadership to NIMBioS-affiliated researchers in securing external funding. They will work with researchers to craft and hone their vision for proposed research efforts, and drafting language to clearly capture that vision and communicate it to funders and evaluators.

A candidate should have some relevant subject matter expertise in mathematical modeling and statistical modeling sufficient to understand the nature of research, education, and outreach efforts being proposed to funders, and should be able to draft management plans and reasonable timelines for workflow and deliverables. Lastly, the person will be expected to help shepherd the paperwork involved with proposals through various stages of approvals.

The candidate should have excellent organizational and communication skills and experience working with researchers in a STEM field.



Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

  • MA/MS in a field related to mathematical modeling, or instead an MA/MS in a field not related to mathematical modeling but also having two years of experience working in a research lab in a STEM field involving mathematical modeling
  • 4+ years experience in a role involving the preparation of grant proposals to external funding sources
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work/communicate with/manage a diverse and multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of contracts, grants, and budget principles across multiple funding agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities and goals.
Preferred qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in a field related to mathematical modeling
  • A track record of successful funding on diverse research projects involving mathematical modeling in the life sciences.
  • Familiarity with current federal funding agency templates and forms.
  • A track record of successful team management/leadership for a team of interdisciplinary academic participants.
  • Ability to delegate tasks efficiently.
