Anticipated Hiring Range

$3,338 per month ($40,056.00 Annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

The Laborer position is located at the Estuary & Ocean Science Center on the Tiburon Peninsula in Marin County (3150 Paradise Dr, Tiburon, CA 94920). Under direct supervision, the Laborer is responsible for on-site cleaning, maintenance and grounds keeping duties at The Romberg Tiburon Center. Duties include, but are not limited to Custodial assistance, set-up & breakdown for events at The Bay Conference Center, labor assistance for facilities as requested.

Position Information

Assists the event coordinator with daily routine maintenance for the Bay Conference Center. This includes assisting facilities with general basic repairs to structure or furniture, assisting the custodian with general post- event clean-up. Performs set-up and break-down of furniture layouts that support events. Opens and/or closes the conference center for various events. Performs tasks, such as refreshing coffee service, emptying garbage and recycling receptacles, handling requests for equipment, etc.

Assist facilities staff with the completion of various work-orders and site maintenance. This includes but not limited to dally service calls, set-up jobs and perform manual labor preparation, clean and maintain project locations and shop, maintain and repair fixtures, equipment and appliances.

Assist in grounds maintenance, including such activities as pruning and trimming trees and shrubbery; removing undergrowth and debris; weeding and brush removal: using a spade, hoe, or rake to prepare or clean assigned areas; cleaning gutters, culverts, and other drainage structures; power washing assigned areas; cleaning roadsides, streets, and related areas.

Assist the custodian with cleaning project that require two people.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Abilities:

Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; perform regular strenuous manual labor; and safely move heavy items in excess of 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in public higher education.

Experience working in a marine research laboratory setting.

Experience working in conference center operations.

Experience working in urban landscaping and maintenance, using power tools, saws and mowers

Required License/Certification

Possess a Valid unrestricted California Driver's License; comply with the Defensive Driver's Training program requirements if a vehicle is used on official business. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

Environmental/Physical/Special

Laborers are required to walk, lift, stand, push, pull, grasp, reach, kneel, twist and climb and to drive university vehicles. Ability to move heavy items in excess of 50 lbs. and perform activities involving manual labor including: clean grounds, move heavy objects, move furniture, pickup and delivery of materials, dig holes, and other duties.

Duties may involve indoor hazards, such as, working near materials such as laboratory chemicals, cleaning solvents and outdoor hazards such as poison oak and Round-up herbicide.

Laborers must be able to work in or out of doors in all weather conditions. Expectations regarding working relationships and conditions Include:

    • Cleans, maintains and services work areas, materials, tools, and equipment used in performance of duties.
    • Performs all work in accordance with safety procedures and instructions or training.
    • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
    • Completes job tasks, related support tasks such as cleaning the shop, and emergency response assignments according to the priority in which they are assigned, understanding that specific duties can vary widely from task to task and day to day.
    • Works various days and shifts, including weekends and evenings, as assigned to meet operational requirements.
    • Coordinates work activities with the rest of RTC staff.
    • Communicates with supervisor and colleagues verbally in person, in writing, and by telephone or radio to receive work assignments and any obstacles or opportunities encountered.
