The Department of English in the School of Humanities at the University of Lynchburg invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor of English in Creative Writing with specializations in Fiction and Poetry. Appointment will begin August 2022.

 Successful candidates will have a completed MFA in Fiction or Fiction and Poetry, and/or PhD with a core concentration in Creative Writing, at time of appointment. Successful candiate will be able to teach multi-genre introductory and advanced creative writing workshops in addition to composition courses (capped at 12 students) and general education literature courses, which are taught by all faculty in the department. Candidates with a PhD will have the opportunity to teach upper level literature courses in their area of expertise. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a record of publishing, with promise for future publications, in fiction. Candidates must also show a commitment to diversity and inclusion through their creative work, pedagogy, and/or service. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a record of publishing in fiction and poetry, experience teaching composition, and interests in Nature Writing, early American Literature, and/or Africana Studies. 

 

 

 

In addition to a 3/4 teaching load, the position will include participation in service to the department and the university, including advising for the Creative Writing Minor and serving as faculty advisor for the Prism, the University of Lynchburg’s student-run literary journal. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the nomination of writers for the Dr. Richard H. Thornton Reading Series—an endowment that brings three or more acclaimed writers to campus for readings and workshops each year.

1) a letter of application, 2) a current CV, 3) a creative writing sample of 10-20 pages of fiction or a combination of fiction and poetry, 4) unofficial graduate transcripts, 5) three letters of reference, and 6) a diversity statement, which addresses how the candidate’s cultural, experiential, and/or academic background contributes to their understanding of diversity and their dedication to inclusive pedagogy. The selected candidate will be required to provide official transcripts and must successfully pass a background check that is satisfactory to the University.  EOE.
