Institutional Overview

Texas A&M University-Central Texas (A&M-Central Texas) is a regional university, one of 11 universities within the Texas A&M University System. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). A&M-Central Texas is an upper-level institution offering the junior- and senior-level coursework needed to successfully complete baccalaureate degrees, and all coursework leading to the completion of graduate degrees, including master’s and specialist programs. The university provides a wide range of course schedules, including traditional face-to-face on campus, online, hybrid, evening, and weekend classes.

The beautiful campus of A&M-Central Texas has three modern buildings and is located on 672 acres of land in Killeen, Texas. Located in the heart of central Texas, Killeen has a city population of over 153,000, a county metro population of 475,367, and a thriving economy fueled by Fort Hood, a large military base, government service, and regional health care services. Killeen is located in a rapidly growing area of Central Texas that is served by two Interstate highways and a regional airport. It is approximately one hour northwest of Austin. The area is known for its low cost of living, friendly people, cultural diversity, and its well-developed infrastructure.

About the College

The College Arts and Sciences (CAS) at A&M-Central Texas enrolls approximately 900 students across its five departments: Humanities, Nursing, Science and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Social Work. CAS offers undergraduate degrees in anthropology, aviation science, biology, criminal justice, English, history, liberal studies, mathematics, mechanical engineering technology, music, nursing, political science, sociology, and social work. CAS also offers Master of Arts (MA) degrees in English and history, Master of Science (MS) degrees in homeland security, mathematics, and liberal studies, and a Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) degree in Criminal Justice. CAS has 32 full-time faculty members; the college is proud of its outstanding faculty, innovative curriculum, and family-friendly atmosphere.

The Position

The dean will serve as the academic and administrative leader for the college and will be responsible for the strategic and academic direction of its operations. The dean will work with department chairs, faculty, and staff to achieve the goals of the college and the university through shared governance, collaborative and consultative processes, and consensus-building. The dean will be committed to faculty and staff development and adopt strategies to support faculty teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the teacher-scholar model. The dean will report to the provost/vice president for academic and student affairs. The dean will be an excellent communicator who can create and foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a vision for the college that is consistent with the university’s mission as given in the strategic plan and the academic master plan, and develop plans and priorities to achieve the mission, including those related to the accreditation process

  • Initiate and support activities resulting in continuous improvement of undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, including program accreditation, ongoing curriculum review, reporting quality assurance through the college’s institutional effectiveness report, and external funding

  • Ensure compliance with college, state, and national expectations and standards, including state standards for approved programs and standards for accreditation

  • Develop plans for the intermediate and long-term college growth in consultation with the department chairs, faculty, and staff. Integrate these plans into the college’s institutional effectiveness plan and strategic plan

  • Supervise the administrative staff, advisors, and department chairs in the conduct of the routine business of the college

  • Maintain programs for effective academic advising, degree planning, and maintenance of student records. Certify students for graduation

  • Support the university’s student-recruiting programs and develop college-level student-recruiting programs serving both traditional and non-traditional students

  • Supervise the development of personnel policies and procedures within the college and ensure compliance and consistency with university-wide faculty personnel policies and procedures

  • Identify faculty and staff personnel needs and demonstrate a commitment to the recruitment, advancement, and retention of a diverse faculty and staff

  • Develop and manage the budget for the college

  • Provide support to student organizations and activities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Ph.D. or research doctorate equivalent in content and level to the Ph.D. from an accredited university in a discipline that is included in or supportive of the College of Arts and Sciences

  • Rank of full professor

  • Five (5) years of experience as department chair or equivalent leadership position

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience at a public regional university

  • Ability to interact within diverse populations

  • Experience with accreditation processes

  • Experience with budgeting

  • Experience developing community and academic relationships

  • Experience implementing policy and procedures to support and meet local needs

  • Ability to empower programs and faculty
