Specific work hours to be agreed upon by the supervisor and employee prior to the onset of employment.

Summary:

The Academic Literacy and Language (ALL) Center consists of two academic areas: 1) Academic Literacy, which supports students in developmental reading and writing courses and 2) English for Academic Purposes, which supports multilingual students through their entire academic career at RACC. ALL Center tutors are responsible for helping students develop academic literacy skills that they can transfer to their college-level courses.

Tutors help students to define their academic goals, review key concepts covered in the classroom, help clarify or answer any questions, assist students with homework assignments, projects, and/or papers, and work with students to develop strong academic skills, including study strategies, note-taking techniques, and exam preparation. Connected tutors will be assigned to specific course sections to support students with targeted tutoring or to liaise between students and other available tutors. Embedded tutors will attend classes and guide students, provide feedback, and answer questions during hands-on practice in consultation with the instructor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of All Tutors:
  1. Assist developmental and/or multilingual students with study-related needs, such as understanding and interpreting assignment instructions and requirements.
  2. Provide help with technology-related needs, such as how to:
  • Navigate Learning Management Systems (Canvas, MyEnglishLab, Quizlet, etc.)
  • Use Microsoft Word; print; develop computer literacy
  • Conduct research in Google, ProQuest, and other databases
  • Create multimedia projects using Microsoft PowerPoint, video recordings, etc.
  • Provide reading and writing tutoring. As a literacy tutor, maintain knowledge of the assignment rubrics and instructions, and provide assistance accordingly.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to students: Maintain respectful, inclusive, and positive attitude toward students and role model positive academic student behavior when appropriate.
  • Maintain records, including: student attendance in AccuTrack, tutoring sessions, and other student interactions.
  • Maintain confidentiality while addressing the needs of students.
  • Utilize online tutoring platforms as necessary (WCOnline, Zoom, etc.).
  • Coach and mentor other tutors as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Foundational Studies or his/her designee.
  • Qualifications:

    Education and/or Experience:

    Required:

    1. B.A. or higher in Education or another pertinent discipline, such as English or TESOL
    2. A minimum of six months’ experience teaching and/or tutoring literacy (reading, writing, or ESL)

    Preferred:

    1. TESOL certification or reading specialist certification
    2. Middle / High School Teaching Certification may be considered for the Foundational Studies Integrative Reading and Writing positions
    3. Community college experience
    4. Bilingual English/Spanish
    Other Skills and Abilities:
    • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills and the ability to work well with diverse populations
    Computer Skills:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet skills. Knowledge of Canvas LMS or other educational technology a plus.

    Communication Skills:

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no

    variables.

    Mathematical Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
