The National MagLab is operated for the National Science Foundation by a collaboration of institutions comprising Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The NHMFL operates the world’s most powerful electro-magnets at Florida State University, the Univ. of Florida and Los Alamos National Lab including a 45 T dc magnet and a 35.2 T (1.5 GHz) NMR magnet.

Present projects include development of a 40 T all-superconducting magnet. Our long-term plan includes development of 30 T NMR magnets, neutron scattering magnets, and resistive-superconducting hybrid magnets up to 60 T.

Responsibilities

The Magnet Science and Technology (MS&T) Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking an exceptional individual to work as a materials test engineer performing mechanical and electrical properties testing on materials and components used for the construction of high field magnets. Conduct materials properties tests, often with materials subject to extreme environmental test conditions, such as test environments in the temperature range from 4 K to 400 K as well as tests in high magnetic fields. Requires specimen preparation and set-up, basic test programming using MTS test software and Labview custom programs. Wire sensor and instrumentation signals to data acquisition equipment to record physical measurements of force, strain, temperature, etc. and analyze results of measurements. Perform test specimen design, inventory, metrology, and photo documentation. Perform physical calibration of force, strain, displacement, and temperature sensors. Utilize ASTM and International Test Standards for procedure and test techniques.

Document procedures and test results in a written format. Reports include tabularized data, and descriptions of test procedures, equipment and materials. Maintain the laboratory file and data management system. Attend team meetings to discuss project testing needs and report test results. Conduct background research to help develop and define materials test requirements. Interact with other professional staff for test method development, and the design and construction of non-standard test specimens and fixtures. Perform general laboratory duties such as housekeeping, purchase requests, tool and equipment-maintenance, organization and inventory. Publish or/or present the results of test programs in journals or conferences when appropriate.

Qualifications

Academic master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science or highest-level terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field of specialization; or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience and otherwise qualified to perform assigned duties.

  • Experience operating MTS or similar mechanical testing equipment is required.
  • Must be proficient in the use of spreadsheets for data analysis, manipulation and plotting to characterize material properties such as yield strength, elastic modulus, and trends related to test variables such as temperature, pressure, rates, etc.
  • We are seeking candidates who are highly motivated and eager to work flexibly and creatively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of mechanics of materials and the mechanical and physical properties of materials.
  • The successful candidate should have experience conducting mechanical tests of materials using PC-controlled materials test machines.
Preferred

Experience programming LabView is preferred.
