Research Technician II for Histopathology and Tissue Shared Resource (HTSR), Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University Medical Center

The mission of Georgetown's Histopathology & Tissue Shared Resource (HTSR) is to provide a resource for accessing human tissue for translational research to the NCI-designated Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) Research Consortium. Within this Consortium, the HTSR provides comprehensive high quality laboratory and interpretive pathology services to researchers at both the LCCC in Washington, DC, and the John Theurer Cancer Center in New Jersey.

The Research Technician II provides skilled medical technology and histology capabilities that support the scope of the pathology and histology services, and HTSR's research related functions and goals. As a team member of the Human Tissue Bank (an HTSR sub-division), the Research Technician II supports biomarker discovery and validation projects for translational research studies, as well as for animal model research studies. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Operations & Tissue Banking, and cooperatively interacting and seamlessly coordinating with members of all three HTSR sub-divisions, the Research Technician II has duties that include but are not limited to:

Tissue Procurement and Distribution
  • Facilitates daily tissue procurement by retrieving tissue from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) surgical pathology suite.
  • Provides support for general banking and special collections, including routine and non-routine tissue collection.
  • Communicates with surgical pathology administrative staff, technicians, Pathology Assistants, and Pathology Residents to support collections.
  • Faithfully documents tissue collection activities so that tissue samples can be tracked and identified.
  • Maintains project-specific specimen tracking logs and related documentation, and communicates appropriately with designed research/laboratory staff
  • Helps maintain organization of ambient and frozen biospecimen inventories.
  • Retrieves archival blocks and slides from hospital archives.
  • Retrieves frozen tissues from HTB freezers.
  • Documents observed sample condition and, when applicable, ensures return of samples to the proper repository or archive location.
  • Performs paraffin and frozen tissue microtomy.
  • Assists with the distribution and quality assurance of non-tissue biospecimen.
  • Helps prepare shipping manifests and pack shipments of HTB materials for distribution to outside users.
  • Faithfully enters data related to sample distribution into appropriate databases and project files.


Identification of Samples for Translational Research Projects
  • Reviews medical and clinical charts to identify patient samples appropriate for research study.
  • Schedules and assists with pathology review with the HTSR pathologist.
  • Performs literature reviews and internet searches to ensure appropriate sample identification.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of all patient and tissue data including research codes and labels on slides and reports provided to investigators.
  • Assists sample selection and prepares routine documentation for HTB submissions.


Database Entry
  • Performs entry into and maintenance of consent and procurement databases with close coordination with other LCCC/GUMC recruitment groups.
  • Extracts relevant data from pathology reports and enters it into tissue databases.
  • Faithfully enters pathology evaluation results into appropriate documents and databases.
  • Faithfully enters data related to sample distribution into request files and databases.


Consenting
  • Reviews daily Operating Room schedule and identifies patients appropriate for translational research projects at GUMC/LCCC.
  • Meets with surgical patients and consents patients for excess tissue use for research purposes.
  • Documents all consents in appropriate databases, and promptly labels and files all hard-copy consents in locked storage cabinet.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Monitors patient enrollment and research consent activity across three IRB primary biobanking protocols.


Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures training and certifications are current - for example, all GU and MedStar CITI (HIPAA and Human Subjects), IATA/DOT and all safety trainings
  • Performs all activities in compliance with HTSR SOPs.
  • Disposes of waste and contaminated materials according to laboratory and institutional policies and procedures.


Administration
  • Prepares billing sheets to reflect and charge for work performed.
  • Assumes other duties appropriate to the position and as directed by HTSR supervisors, as well as those of other HTB technician as needed.
  • Performs all activities in compliance with HTSR SOPs.
  • Uses appropriate engineering controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Maintains and updates appropriate records, logs, and databases applicable to the unit/area of duties and research.
  • Orders and inventories supplies.
  • Cleans and maintains all work areas.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 2 years laboratory or clinical experience/skills, preferably with prior interaction with patients and knowledge of medical terminology
  • Aptitude for working with people and detailed oriented
  • Knowledge of anatomy and histology
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheet applications and with file and database maintenance.
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Initiative and problem-solving ability
  • Typing and office experience and skills
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to document and keep complete records
