The University of Virginia School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a Chief of Staff to serve as a pivotal member of the Dean’s leadership team. This position will report directly to the Dean of SOM and is responsible for central coordination of SOM activities. In support of the school's education, research, and clinical mission, this role will provide strategic planning and daily operational support at the discretion of the Dean. In addition, this role may assist with policy formulation/interpretation, communications, and responsibility for managing sensitive and confidential matters.

The Chief of Staff works closely with a range of functional areas, including human resources, operations, clinical, education, faculty affairs, research, and finance depending on the organization's needs. In addition, the position may manage the annual initiatives (salary planning, performance evaluations, etc.) to ensure alignment with university strategic goals and objectives.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Acts as an advisor by proactively addressing undefined issues for resolution. Works collaboratively with university stakeholders to research problems and provide the Dean with the necessary information to make informed decisions.
  • Works to advance a wide range of initiatives, programs, and projects. Manages critical priorities, agendas, and timelines; tracks and monitors projects to achieve measurable results.
  • Maintains knowledge of compliance with current policies and procedures.
  • Prepares critical analyses, presentations, reports, talking points, speeches, and other documents for diverse audiences, in addition to drafting internal and external correspondence and executive summaries for departmental or unit leadership and other senior administrators.
  • Coordinate and collaborate marketing and communications on behalf of the Dean (includes social media).
  • Develops strong partnerships with administrative and academic units. Serves as a liaison between human resources and the Dean on critical senior leadership recruitment efforts, performance management, and compensation initiatives that involve sensitive and confidential data.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Candidates will be considered for either an Assistant Dean of Administration, Associate Dean of Administration or Senior Associate Dean of Administration, and dependent on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Requirements for Chief of Staff, Assistant Dean of Administration:

Education: Master's degree in business, accounting, or related discipline
Experience: At least five years of administrative and supervisory experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Excellent verbal and written communication and experience working with diverse stakeholders at various levels.

Minimum Requirements for Chief of Staff, Associate Dean of Administration:

Education: Master's degree in business, accounting, or related discipline
Experience: At least seven years of administrative and supervisory experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Excellent verbal and written communication and experience working with diverse stakeholders at various levels.

Minimum Requirements for Chief of Staff, Senior Associate Dean of Administration:

Education: Master's degree in business, accounting, or related discipline
Experience: At least ten years of senior management experience, preferably in higher education sector. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Excellent verbal and written communication and experience working with diverse stakeholders at various levels.
