St. Lawrence University invites applications for a one-year visiting position at the assistant professor level in Critical Media Practice, to begin August 15, 2022. The teaching load is three courses per semester. We seek a dynamic teacher and practitioner who is aware of new developments in our evolving media landscape and is prepared to support a diverse group of students making and critiquing media that intervene in a range of contemporary social issues. This new faculty member will play a key role in the new Digital Media & Film program by teaching courses that integrate filmmaking and digital media production at various levels. They will help develop and teach a new foundational course, “Film and Media Action,” which engages student interest in digital content creation, new media, and social justice. In addition, we are seeking a candidate who can teach one or more of these course offerings: Introduction to Film Studies, Introduction to Filmmaking, and History of Cinema.

The field of specialization is open, but we are especially interested in candidates with experience in areas such as digital content creation, digital journalism, and/or film and digital media production. Our ideal candidates would produce scholarly work that addresses social engagement, activism, and/or critical analysis of the social impacts of contemporary media culture and technologies. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with expertise in contemporary Black, Latinx, and indigenous media production and activism.

St. Lawrence University is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community that supports students and teachers of all backgrounds. We require applicants to submit a one-page diversity statement on how their teaching, scholarship, and/or service could promote diversity and inclusion in a liberal arts environment. For more information, see the St. Lawrence University Statement on Diversity https://www.stlawu.edu/president/statement-diversity.

St. Lawrence University is located in Northern New York, between the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and the Canadian border. The wider region includes Lake Placid, New York’s Finger Lakes region, the Akwesasne Mohawk community, Ottawa, and Montreal.
