Description:

The Avionics Technician II, under general supervision, will design, develop, test, and/or supervise the manufacturing and installation of electrical equipment, components, and/or systems for academic and scientific use with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) as the primary focus.

Responsibilities:

Research and Development
  • Test and troubleshoot instruments, components, and assemblies, using circuit testers, oscilloscopes, or voltmeters.
  • Evaluate electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research programs, applying knowledge of electricity and materials.
  • Monitor technical progress, design tests, assess performance data, and develop solutions to technical problems.
  • Assist in contribution in application of electrical engineering and scientific principles to meet technical requirements.
  • Support the development of technical concepts and plans for implementation.
  • Support in the authoring, editing, and contributing to production of technical reports and other technical products, such as overall project concepts and descriptions, test plans and technical reports.


Equipment Design and Installation
  • Install electrical and electronic components, assemblies, and systems in aircraft, using hand tools, power tools, or soldering irons. Install machine or equipment replacement parts.
  • Set up and operate ground support and test equipment to perform functional flight tests of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Lay out installation of aircraft assemblies and systems, following documentation such as blueprints, manuals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Analyze test or performance data to assess equipment operation.
  • Fabricate parts, components and test aids as required.
  • Operate computer-aided drafting and design applications to design avionics system modifications.

Support Other
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Associates degree in avionics, aviation technology, or aviation maintenance management.
  • Five (5) years' experience in avionics, electronics, airframe maintenance, or closely related field.
  • Additional education/experience may be considered as a substitution:
    • High School diploma or GED and seven (7) years' experience in avionics, electronics, airframe maintenance, or closely related field.
    • Associates degree in related field and five (5) years' experience in avionics, electronics, airframe maintenance, or closely related field.
    • Bachelors degree in related field and three (3) experience in avionics, electronics, airframe maintenance, or closely related field.
  • Knowledge of electronic systems and component materials.
  • Experience with electronic systems, electronics troubleshooting, electronic testing and design.
  • Exceptional communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Civil aircraft experience
  • Direct hands-on experience with common electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, etc.
  • Experience with small UAS avionics, interface circuit design, avionics integration, sensors and/or sensor processing (E/O, IR, IMU, etc.)
  • Interest in specialized fields such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Air Worthiness, Human Factors, Command and Control, Networking, Frequency Analysis, or other related high technology fields
  • Firmware and software development experience

  • Travel associated with position may be up to 20%
  • The person hired will have access to information and items protected under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), and therefore that person must be a U.S. person as defined by ITAR, 22 CFR 120.15.
