Job Summary: Assists in research work in support of a major research project which may include duties such as gathering, tracking and entering data, preparing support material, etc.

Additional Department Summary: The National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Foundation has provided funding for a
second research project, Exhaustive Defiance: Black Youth the Persistent Quest to Democratizing Extracurricular Activities in Public Schools, 1964-1975. A portion of that funding will be used to hire 3-4 research assistants (RA) to help the Principal Investigator (PI) search out archival files pertinent to this study. This position provides several opportunities to those interested in student activism and educational equality, race and education, extracurricular activities and democracy, and citizenship and public schools to hone their research skills. This position will directly assist the PI with early drafts of the book.

While the Office of Research and Economic Development at the University of Alabama
is monitoring the fellowship, the RAs will be under the supervision of the PI. The RA is responsible for assisting the PI in a variety of research tasks which may include the following and/or other duties specific to the research objectives: Locate archival materials pertinent to the research study; Create files to categorize the archival results; Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data; Meet with the PI monthly to report your findings; Be able to dedicate 20 hours a month; Performs other related duties as required.

Required Minimum Qualifications: At least two (2) semesters of research support experience or a Bachelor’s degree. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to dedicate 20 hours a month.

Skills and Knowledge: Subject knowledge and oral/written communication skills to discuss and document
research progress. Ability to work independently and accurately to problem solve technical and
methodological issues that arise during the course of the research. Ability to apply sound research
techniques, methodology and logical critical analysis. Strong organization and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an graduate or undergraduate studies programs with experience
and authority in the subject matter of the research project in question.
