Job Description

Be part of Northern Arizona University’s vision of educating students to adapt and respond to global issues by contributing to the Center for International Education’s award-winning Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP). IGP is a dual degree program in which students pair a BS in STEM or Business and a BA in language and spend an immersion year abroad doing both coursework and fieldwork.

With language and culture as core pillars of IGP, diversity of thought and approach is a priority among our team. The IGP team is highly motivated and dedicated to enacting positive change in partnership with a highly skilled interdisciplinary and international network.

The Assistant Director role is responsible for aligning IGP’s overall programming with the central student competencies, overseeing the program’s workflow processes, ensuring programming and processes are culturally responsive and inclusive, supervising staff, and representing IGP with on-campus and international partners.

NAU is ranked in IIE’s Open Doors as #6 in the country for year-long study abroad, which is due in part to IGP’s long-term immersion model. This position requires an ability to successfully communicate across cultures with respect and reciprocity. Job Description

Student Support

  • Lead IGP Level 3 and 4 programming, including the Level 3 “pre-departure” programming suite of events and Level 4 check-ins while students are abroad.
  • Manage all activities that take place within one of IGP’s specific regions. Such activities include assisting students with partner selection based on their professional majors, introducing students to partners, working with students while abroad, and assisting with the fieldwork matching process.
  • Lead the overall IGP fieldwork strategy, working with host institutions, internship providers, academic college committees, mentors abroad, NAU faculty mentors, and advisors to connect the involved parties and ensure a smooth and consistent fieldwork process for students.
  • Process all IGP student fieldwork documents by collecting and routing them to all appropriate campus partners for assuring safe and high-quality professional experiences for students.
  • Lead IGP’s program management within Bblearn and Qualtrics for student programming.
  • Lead the team in a consistent strategy within the program tools for managing and documenting student information.
  • Lead the team in the annual update of student materials and petitions, including accessibility reviews.

On-campus and international partner management

  • Lead the connection with IGP faculty mentors on NAU campus, including bi-annual faculty mentor meetings, ad hoc student support work, and overseeing the language checkpoint process for students.
  • Serve as the liaison with Education Abroad, Office of the Registrar, Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, and Academic Advising.
  • Partner with campus and international partners to address disruptions due to unexpected events (such as COVID-19 delays) to keep students on track for graduation.
  • Engage in special projects with international partners, including grant proposal projects and joint conference collaborations.
  • Own the overall international partnership strategy and documentation, including startup and closeout of partnerships as needed.
  • Coordinate the team in the annual engagement strategy with campus and international partners.
  • Visit partners and host visiting delegations from partner institutions.
  • Establish a global internship provider strategy and funding support models.

IGP Team Leadership

  • Serve as the IGP Director’s designee when required.
  • Supervise IGP Coordinators, including their supervision of graduate assistants and interns.
  • Develop a regular IGP intern pathway to find, train, and support interns in clearly defined roles.
  • Lead the team in roadmap planning and maintenance to execute program objectives.
  • Lead the team in the annual update of the staff manual.

IGP Program Management and Evolution

  • Develop and maintain IGP policies, procedures, and integration across relevant partners.
  • Support the comprehensive alignment of competency outcomes with event objectives and subsequent program evaluation.
  • Support efforts to maximize cross-listed academic offerings to actualize interdisciplinarity and reduce students’ time to graduation.
  • Support the IGP development and grant writing strategy.
  • Participate in program research projects and publications.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field AND five years of administrative/coordination experience; OR
  • Master’s degree and three years of administrative/coordination experience; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in successfully operating across cultures on mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Supervisory experience (of student, permanent, and/or contracted staff).
  • Experience working with outcome-oriented student programming.
  • International experience, including virtual and/or physical mobility.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, which is part of the IGP program (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, German).
  • Familiarity with Bblearn, PeopleSoft, and Enterprise Reporting.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

The budgeted salary amount is $62,996 - $67,000.

Commensurate with experience.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
