Description of primary duties and responsibilities::

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Division of Facilities Management functions are to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service.

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The General Utility Team is responsible for maintaining the interior and exterior elements of the FSU campus. Many of This position also provides on-site leadership to 5-6 special project technicians), which includes: coordinating daily routine and detailed custodial and general labor activities; monitoring workplace safety and ensuring proper personal protective equipment is worn. The General Utility Team’s responsibilities include but are not limited to daily trash and litter collection; pressure washing buildings, sidewalks, and other structures; minor road and parking lot repairs; concrete and brick paver sidewalk repairs; exterior window washing; exterior signage repair; adverse weather preparation and response; special events support, and water extraction.

Description of Work Continued::

Duties, Skills and Knowledge
● Performs water extraction and minor remediation tasks.
● Sets up and monitors air movers and/or dehumidifiers.
● Performs enhanced disinfection related tasks utilizing equipment such as Kaivac cleaning machines or electrostatic sprayers.
● Performs general and detailed cleaning as assigned.
● Must be willing to clean up emergency spills, vomit, urine, and excrement when it occurs.
● Ensures that the external elements of the University – buildings, roads, walks, landscaped areas are clean by planning work assignments and actively supervising the quality of the general utility team’s work.
● Performs all related work as requested by the supervisor
● Performs minor pest control spraying in academic and administrative buildings under the direction of the Building Environmental Services Manager.
Lead Worker
● Leads assigned personnel to accomplish non-routine cleaning and special projects.
● Serves as a liaison between the team and the supervisor, inspects assigned areas and provides feedback to the supervisor on the quantity and quality of daily work produced by the team.
● Instructs and assists technicians as needed in cleaning procedure and techniques by applying department determined cleaning methods.
● Works with management and other campus staff to resolve customer needs.
● Responsible for simple record keeping including maintaining and evaluating equipment and supply log.
● Assist supervisor with distribution and storage of supplies and equipment.
● Stock and label applicable products and supplies.
● Performs inspections as assigned and provides feedback to the supervisor on the quantity and quality of daily work produced by the team

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements::

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

Knowledge skills and abilities::

Knowledge-Technical: Performs basic cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, etc. to keep working areas in a clean and orderly condition. Fills dispensers, such as tissue and soap dispensers, with the proper product and amount. Customer Service: Recognizes potential problems in service and addresses and resolves promptly and respectfully. Communication: Listens to instructions asks necessary questions to complete tasks
Safety/Health Compliance: Services and or replaces cleaning and maintenance machinery equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications::

High school graduate, with two years experience in the field.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a member of the prestigious University of North Carolina System. Situated in southeastern North Carolina, FSU prides itself in being in one of the most diverse cities in the country and neighbor to one of the nation’s largest military installations – Fort Bragg.

FSU has a rich history that serves as genesis for its current status as a leading institution of higher learning. A year after the Civil War ended, the Phillips School provided primary education to Fayetteville’s black citizens, and the Sumner School provided intermediate education for this population. The two schools were consolidated in 1869 and dedicated in April of that year as the Howard School, in honor of the Freedman’s Bureau chief General O.O. Howard. Seven prominent African-American men pooled $136 to purchase two lots for the first building that housed the Howard School. Robert Harris was named the first principal of the Howard School.

In 1877, the Howard School became not just the first public normal school for African Americans in North Carolina but also the first state-sponsored institution for the education of African-American teachers in the South. It was renamed the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville that year, Fayetteville State Teachers College in 1939, Fayetteville State College in 1963, and Fayetteville State University in 1969.

While FSU’s roots are as a teacher education institution, it now offers nearly 70 degrees at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. Many of the programs are accredited by the top agencies. The university’s School of Business and Economics is endorsed by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). AACSB is one of the most prestigious and rigorous accrediting bodies for business programs in higher education. Currently, less than one-third of U.S. business programs and only 15% of the world's business programs have earned AACSB accreditation. Receipt of this distinguished accreditation provides evidence that FSU’s School of Business and Economics has established itself as a leader among business schools.
