The University of Virginia, Sound Justice Lab invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The Sound Justice Lab is a newly formed collective of students and faculty bridging law and the humanities. We aim to develop existing and new collaborations within the University and with lawyers, advocates, artists, and other community partners, to explore the sonic dimensions of legal and extra-legal processes, and the role of sound, voice, noise, and hearing in shaping ideas of and claims for justice. The successful candidate duties will involve ethnographic and archival research, lab administration, student mentoring, and creative production.
A PhD in Anthropology or a related field by the starting date of the appointment is required. Experience with ethnographic research and multi-media work is required. The ideal candidate will have experience working on issues relating to justice and the law, as well as a strong demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The geographical area of focus is open, with preference for francophone West Africa. The candidate will also need to have excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work well as a member of a team.
This position is a one-year appointment, with a start date in January 2022.
