Tulane School of Medicine Associate Dean for Education and Academic  Affairs

The Associate Dean for Education and Academic Affairs at Tulane School of Medicine serves as the educational leader for medical student education, and oversees the medical education curriculum and all academic matters directly related to meeting the institutional educational objectives for medical students.  The Associate Dean is responsible for all aspects of the development, implementation, and assessment of the curriculum.  The Associate Dean is also responsible for on-going continuous quality improvement and preparing for and ensuring continued LCME accreditation.

The Associate Dean demonstrates outstanding professional behavior and serves as a role model for all aspects of teaching and learning.

Essential Job Functions

• Oversees the medical student curriculum and serves as Chair of the Curriculum Committee

• Responsible for all methods of curriculum assessment and all educational performance data including required reporting to internal and external agencies

• Works directly with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions and other senior leaders in the School of Medicine and University to prioritize educational initiatives that enhance medical student performance

• Supervises the Assistant Educational Deans and the Directors of the Office of Medical Education, Simulation Center and Standardized Patient Program

• Supervises Course or Clerkship Directors responsible for School-based courses or clerkships: i.e., Foundations in Medicine, Clinical Diagnosis, Community Health

• Assists in the identification, recruitment, training, and retention of faculty from within the School of Medicine interested in teaching medical students and/or involvement with admissions and advising.

• Serves as ad hoc member of the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on appropriate School of Medicine committees related to medical student education

• Works with both the UME Curriculum Equity, Diversity Inclusion Director and the Chief Clinical Diversity Officer to ensure a robust EDI curriculum that effectively prepares students for their role as future physicians.

• Provides SOM leadership for:

• Educational and programmatic processes and procedures

• Initiatives as specified through School of Medicine leadership

• May advise the Dean, Provost, and other executive leadership on SOM educational program issues

• Performs related duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

MD or MD/PhD degree and minimum 10 years’ experience in medical student education and curriculum development. A record of successful innovation and previous School of Medicine administrative leadership experience at level of Assistant or Associate Dean is preferred[DP1] .

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Experience in medical education leadership and curriculum development and delivery

• Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.

• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

• Ability to balance strategic planning and operational priorities.

• Ability to work constructively with new and existing external partners.

• Data analysis and results planning.

• Serves as a role model for medical student teaching and learning
