SUMMARY:

This position will become an integral member of the newly structured Office of Career Education & Professional Development whose mission is to educate and empower students to reach their career goals as they navigate the career ecosystem, discover new career paths, engage in experiential learning, and build connections within and beyond the signing and deaf community. Career Educators will play a key role to align its career readiness efforts with the General Education curriculum as a foundation and with the curriculums of the other academic departments/programs within the Schools as an effort to infuse career core competencies into academic curriculums to infuse academic and career success for our students. The Career Educator - Curriculum & Content, leads the Career Success Partner Network that consist of colleagues on campus who have a high volume of career conversations with faculty/students, and the Experimental Learning & Internship Success (ELIS) that will be tasked to develop best practices, standards, implement/revise current academic curriculums to bridge core career competencies into current academic curriculums in efforts to infuse academic & career success, and processes for internships across campus and around experimental learning as a part of the larger Career EcoSystem. The Career Educator also plays a critical role in the Experimental Learning & Internship and Employer Engagement Council to strengthen academic and career pathways with how career readiness can be more fully integrated into the overall curriculum, and focus on multifaceted value propositions and strategic relationship engagement with key external partners such as our employers and alumni.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Career Education, Curriculum & Programming

  • Assists in the design and implementation of the Office of Career Education & Professional Development programming, partnerships, resources, curriculum development as a part of overall academic and career education, and assessments including delivering on strategic priorities, program goals, and student learning outcomes by infusing academic and career core competencies as a part of the overall academic and career success for our students.
  • Uses assessment tools (both student self-assessments and program-level assessments), curriculum mapping, data collection, and reporting to assess effectiveness of programming and make recommendations for future programs; and incorporates feedback for ongoing improvement of program effectiveness and services including any revision of curriculums to be more career-centric across the general education curriculum and its Schools.
  • Assists with and/or coordinates Career Education & Professional Development programs, events, and other activities as assigned (e.g., workshops, career fairs, virtual library resources).
  • Increases student career awareness by conducting ongoing and consistent outreach to assigned student constituencies and supports faculty in classroom presentations on a wide range of career/educational planning topics.
  • Promotes Career Education & Professional Development services and programs through multiple marketing channels including the use of technology, and various forms of social media.
  • Career Champions Council – Career EcoSystem

  • Plays a key role in the inaugural Career Champions Council initiative which will consists of cross-functional members that will set the strategy and direction for the campus-wide Career EcoSystem on the goals and priorities associated with how career learning including through curriculum development and mapping can be more fully integrated and implemented at Gallaudet.
  • Partners with the Director to identify and cultivate the career success partner members on campus to establish the Career EcoSystem that includes working groups such as:
    • Experiential Learning & Internship Success (ELIS): This working group values experiential learning including co-curricular programming as a part of the overall academic and career success. This working group will develop best practices, standards, curriculum development, and processes for internships across campus around experiential learning and internships. This group will determine standards and objectives to ensure effective internship experiences for students and employers, maximize intern-to-hire opportunities for students, regularly share employer contacts to the benefit of all students and develop campus-wide system of tracking all experiences and learning outcomes. This group will consist of select faculty and on-campus employers, staff internship coordinators, and career services colleagues.
    • Employer Engagement Council (EEC): This working group is focuses on multi-faceted value propositions and strategic relationship engagement with key external partners. This group will identify opportunities to engage external partners in multiple areas of the institution such as hiring, internships, fundraising, and classroom engagement partnerships, complement engaging external-facing faculty and staff who interact with companies and their alums. This group will consist of representatives from each academic school, advancement, employer relations, and select alumni.
    • Career Success Partner Network: The Career Success Partners Network consists of colleagues on campus who are known to have a high volume of career conversations with students, and colleagues that may not be as accustomed to having career conversations, but are passionate about career teaching and wish to participate. This can include faculty, academic advisors, financial aid advisors, administrative support staff, and internship coordinators.
  • Professional Development for Students

  • Creates career development related training, workshops, and virtual modules to support faculty and professional staff are equipped to conduct effective career conversations.
  • In collaboration with faculty and professional staff, advises and empowers students through the career development process with individual career education meetings; review of their current curriculum to ensure core career competencies are infused, assists students with self-assessment, information gathering, decision-making, personal branding, networking, job search strategies and use of social media in the job search process.
  • Maintains current information on recruiting practices, timelines, and industry trends for the designated academic school.
  • Provides coaching and strategies related to access and reasonable accommodations in the workplace as a part of post-graduation outcomes to self-advocate and empower students on their rights in the workplace.
  • Supports students with identifying and securing experiential learning opportunities in industries of interest (including, but not limited to application process, interviewing, acceptance of offer, establishment of learning agreement with employer and academic department, monitoring stipend application process, and coordinating evaluation of internship experience).
  • Maintains current information on recruiting practices, timelines, and industry trends for the assigned major/industry areas, and general trends on workplace and career trends impacting university students.
  • Tracks student activity, including progress towards career goals and placement in internship and full-time opportunities. Maintains records of advising conversations, notes, and relevant information in the department tracking system including BisonCareerLink.
  • Conducts regular outreach to students and monitors students' interest areas, and industries. Adapts coaching style and develops resources to meet the needs of students.
  • Careers Courses

  • Partners with the General Education (GE) curriculum director and faculty to develop and update career course curriculum and materials; and creates goals and priorities to measure progress towards student learning outcomes.
  • Serves as liaison between GE curriculum team and Office of Career Education & Professional Development; and ensures alignment between teachings in career course and career center programming and modules by working closely with GE curriculum director and faculty teaching Career Courses.
  • Collects feedback from faculty and students and make recommendations for changes and updates to courses as needed.
  • Campus Partnerships

  • Develops relationships with campus partners, including faculty, student success colleagues, multicultural student office, and student organizations to provide career education programming and support.
  • Serves as a liaison to at least one of the five schools through the Career Success Partner Network.
  • Partners with key faculty on best practices, standards, curriculum development, and processes for internships across campus around experiential learning and internships through the Experiential Learning & Internship Success (ELIS).
  • Partners with the Employer-Relations Specialist to build on multi-faceted value propositions and strategic relationship engagement with key external partners through the Employer Engagement Council (EEC).
  • Partners with faculty to support internship placements and career development issues for students.
  • Provides resources and information to assist faculty in identifying Office for Career Education & Professional Development services to support student learning outcomes.
  • Professional Development & Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Participates in relevant professional training opportunities and national conferences, and relevant professional associations.
  • Partners with cross-functional colleagues across campus on committee and working groups to support university priorities and initiatives.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training as part of the compliance effort.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • SPECIFICATIONS:

    Required Minimum Qualifications (When the candidate’s resume meets these qualifications, it will be screened in.)

    • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, human resources or related field.
    • A minimum three years of related professional work experience in a higher education setting.
    • Fluency in American Sign Language.

    Preferred Qualifications (While not required, it is an advantage for what the position needs.)

    • Strong expertise in curriculum building and assessments to infuse National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) core competencies into academic curriculums and student learning outcomes.
    • Experience working with students and employers in an advisory/consultative role.
    • Experience with online social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) in a professional setting,
