Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of effective, responsive reference services and research assistance to patrons, including bibliographic instruction, in person and remotely, in collaboration with other reference and curatorial staff.
  • Cataloging rare and special collections materials using current best practices in bibliographic control.
  • Creating, organizing, and maintaining digital content and metadata to facilitate search, discovery, and access to rare and general resources in various formats using a variety of cataloging standards as well as existing and emerging non-MARC metadata schemas and techniques.
  • Building in-depth knowledge of Mercantile special collections and creating guides and other resources that enable the discovery and identification of relevant collection material and empowering individuals to conduct their own research.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of new and emerging standards and technologies relevant to bibliographic control and metadata, and effectively applying them in daily operations.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of the Mercantile’s special collections web presence.
  • Overseeing students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Participating in special events which includes evenings and weekends.
  • Cash handling and credit card point-of-sale equipment operation as needed.
  • Additional duties as necessary and required.
  • Adherence to the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri System.

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Information Science.
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of integrated library system(s).
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards (such as RDA, AACR2, LCSH, and MARC formats).
  • Knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards and encoding schemes such as DACS, EAD, and Dublin Core
  • Experience working with rare books and special collections materials.
  • Strong research and reference skills.
  • Commitment to supporting and working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, efficiently, and sensitively with students, peers, staff, patrons, other members of the university community, and with Library donors and board members.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position on average 70% of the time; move among several work areas across the Library complex 30% of the time.
  • Ability to frequently and safely move book trucks loaded up to 50 pounds; lift and bend with boxes or volumes weighing up to 40 pounds; carry oversized collection materials; position self to access materials on shelves from floor to ceiling height using ladders and stools as needed.
