The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor in the field of Quantum Materials and Technologies (QMT). UNL is Nebraska’s flagship land-grant university. It falls into the R1 Carnegie classification of Doctoral Universities with highest research activity. As Nebraska’s capital, the city of Lincoln provides high-quality amenities and infrastructure at a relatively low cost of living.

The vacant position complements a previous interdepartmental QMT cluster hire and manifests UNL’s aspiring efforts in the field of Quantum Science and Engineering, one of UNL’s eight institutionally-supported grand challenge themes. The QMT initiative builds upon expertise gathered within eighteen years of NSF support for UNL’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, and more than two decades of support of nanomaterials science through core facilities within the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience and the Nebraska Nanoscale Facility, one of sixteen NSF-funded sites establishing the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure.

The experimental QMT position is designed to strengthen quantum materials science in the condensed matter and materials group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, while actively fostering interdisciplinary research within Nebraska’s NSF-funded EPSCoR-RII Track-1 Center for Emergent Quantum Materials and Technologies.

The ideal candidate contributes with cutting-edge experimental work which bridges research between at least two of the three focus research groups (FRGs) of the center. The enhancement of synergy between FRG 1’s work on quantum materials and FRG 2’s work on quantum technologies is the primary objective. Duties also include teaching and service to the Department, College and/or the University.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

The qualified candidate must have a PhD in physics or a related discipline, a strong track record of scholarly activity, and the potential for developing a high-impact, externally-funded research program. The candidate is expected to efficiently contribute to UNL’s collaborative research programs, notably the EPSCoR Center on Emergent Quantum Materials and Technologies. The candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in teaching physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

An interest in developing an interdisciplinary curriculum which enables UNL’s students to obtain a certificate in quantum information science is appreciated.
