Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Events and Marketing, and participating as a key member of the Program Team, the incumbent is responsible for sports information, web communications and social media for the intercollegiate and high performance programs. The incumbent ensures effective positioning of the Faculty’s intercollegiate program within the University and among other universities provincially, nationally, and internationally, through media coverage of sporting events and achievements. Within the Program Team, the incumbent assists with the development, planning, and implementation of a wide variety of public relations initiatives. This position is specifically responsible for the media coverage of sporting events and achievements aimed at heightening the awareness of athletic program results, feature and profile stories, and live broadcasts of events.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • With the Manager, Promotions and Sport Information, the incumbent develops an annual media/communications plan for the intercollegiate program. Liaises regularly with Program Managers, Coaches, and the Event Management Team.
  • Builds a network of sport contacts in the electronic and print media on and off campus, including TV, radio, print and web-based media and responds to routine sports information requests from print/broadcast media and sports information officers from other institutions (including photographers).
  • Establishes procedures for reporting results for all Varsity teams, ensuring compliance with OUAand U SPORTS deadlines/procedures, including weekly sport media releases for both up-coming events and results.
  • Facilitates sport media requests with players and coaches, creates content and publishes materials to the Varsity Blues web pages including; rosters, team biographies, recaps and highlights, photographs and historical data.
  • Engages the U of T community, alumni, provincial and national sport partners through the use of social media (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook), while monitoring social media platforms for inappropriate use and/or comments by community members, including athletes, in order to support a positive image of intercollegiate and high performance sport.
  • Prepares content for season programs, brochures, schedule cards, posters, student athlete handbook and other publicity materials as determined in the annual media and communication plans. Ensures the Student-Athlete Handbook is reviewed by a committee prior to publication.
  • Prepares copy for articlesin internal and external intercollegiate publications. Assists the organizing committee for Intercollegiate events, including, but not limited to, biographical profiles of recipients, scripts etc., and ensures statistical and nomination information is collected for provincial and national recognition.
  • Directs work-study sport information students (4-6 students) in various duties, including researching sport information, pulling sport information from other Websites for use in articles, pullinginformation on various teams (i.e., statistics, competitions, standing etc.)
  • Due to the nature of the role, evening and weekend work is required

+Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Communications or Journalism or an acceptable equivalent combination of education andexperience.
  • Minimum four years of related experience in sport information/ athletic communications, preferably in a University or College setting.
  • Minimum four years experience researching and writing articles, writing for a variety of social media platforms and dealing with the media
  • Demonstrated experience with website development and management is required
  • Strong proficiency with video software, website publishing software, Outlook, Excel, Word, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook is required
  • Knowledge of Class software, Adobe software suite (Photoshop, Indesign) is recommended
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication and editorial skills
  • Ability to deliver high quality workin an environment of overlapping, time sensitive tasks; good organizational skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail; ability to work under strict deadline pressure; creativity
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment
  • Proven ability to collaborate and work effectively within a team and independently
  • Sound understanding and commitment to equity and diversity matters.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience with photography, videography and digital content creation is an asset
  • Ability to troubleshoot video scoreboards and videography equipment is an asset.
