The Opportunity

The Benefits  Coordinator helps administer benefit plans for the 14,000 benefit-eligible employees of the University of Tennessee. Based upon extensive knowledge of the State of Tennessee retirement/insurance programs, this position introduces new employees to the group insurance/retirement plans through orientation sessions for groups of 10 to 50 employees and further provides information to all employees using multiple communication methods throughout the year, especially during the annual enrollment period. This position also answers questions from benefits staff on other campuses. In addition to communicating with employees, the position is responsible for entering insurance coverage information in both the University's SAP system and the State's Edison system and is responsible for the remittance and reconciliation of deferred income plans.

The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the systemwide mission and fully embrace the University’s Be One UT Values, and must be a creative, organized, enthusiastic professional, with the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a fast-changing environment, and must also demonstrate maturity, sound judgment, professional fortitude, and the ability to navigate successfully within a large and complex system of higher education.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing information to university employees about state benefit plans while exercising outstanding customer service
  • Auditing and entering insurance enrollment forms with accuracy
  • Reconciling university insurance coverage data using IRIS and Edison
  • Preparing remittances for the university's 403(b) vendors
  • Maintaining permanent records of all insurance enrollments for the UT System


A high school diploma is required. An advanced degree is preferred.

The following qualifications are required:

  • Five years of insurance and benefits administration and
  • Five years of experience working with the human resources module of an enterprise reporting package
  • General knowledge of the health insurance industry and the rules and regulations governing health insurance plans
  • The ability to communicate effectively with individual employees, groups, and staff through the use of strong verbal, written, and electronic communication methods
  • Knowledge of computer software packages including and especially Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills including the ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines and priorities 
Preferred qualifications include:

  • Specific knowledge of University and State health insurance plans and policies
  • Specific knowledge of Federal law governing employer-provided insurance plans, including coverage rules and requirements under the Affordable Care Act
  • Specific knowledge of university human resources and fiscal policies
  • Knowledge and experience with SAP or other employer human resources/payroll systems
