Position Summary

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University is seeking to hire a Research Assistant I with a biological background to support its Coregonine Science Restoration Initiative. Coregonines are a sub-family of salmon that once comprised more than 10 whitefish and cisco species in the Great Lakes before their diversity was diminished during the 20th century. Fishery managers have endorsed a science-based restoration framework to restore this diversity. The Research Assistant will be expected to work full-time in Ann Arbor with our USGS partner at the Great Lakes Science Center to assist USGS coregonine scientists Amanda Ackiss and Bo Bunnell with their laboratory and field research. Specific duties will include assisting in overseeing and coordinating lab operations, molecular genetics lab work, maintaining experimental live fish in the wet lab and assisting with coordinating experiments, aquatic field work, data entry and compiling and analyzing data to help summarize results for reports and publications.

Conditions may involve working with small volumes of potentially hazardous irritants and ethanol and will require laboratory safety training. Work occurring in the wet lab (fish care) will require moderate physical effort, however, most of the allocated work time will involve laboratory bench and/or desk work.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Fisheries and Wildlife, Aquatic Ecology, or a related biological field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to the research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; valid driver’s license and ability to drive a vehicle. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Desired Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife, Aquatic Ecology, or Biology; experience with molecular genomic techniques; experience with analyzing genomic data in both Windows and Unix environments; experience training undergraduates in a laboratory setting; strong organizational skills to manage, coordinate, and prioritize multiple tasks and projects; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
