Position Summary:

Directly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of playing and practice surfaces for assigned areas. Responsible for maintaining the athletic playing/practice surface and providing grounds support for athletic fields of the Athletic Association.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Ability to effectively maintain all areas of athletic turf/grounds, including infield skinned areas, clay areas, turfgrass, and landscapes with focus on player safety, environmental stewardship, and playability/aesthetics. Ability to interact with coaching staffs and administrators to coordinate field and grounds maintenance for best results and efficiency. Ability to adjust work schedule on a daily basis to maintain athletic fields around practice, workout, and game schedules. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from coaches, individuals, customers and the general public. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with random issues. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands:

Lifting heavy objects, stooping, bending, standing for long periods of time. Lift approximately 50 lbs and over 100 lbs with assistance from crew. Stoop, squat, operate lawn mower, edger, blower, aerifier, roller, irrigation controllers, etc. Work in both hot and cold climates. In the Athletics Grounds department, the individual will drive a UGA Athletics vehicle to transport to the different fields and facilities. The employee may also drive an assigned vehicle to pick up supplies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for all aspects of maintenance, upkeep, renovation, and restoration of assigned areas, including common areas and hardscapes. Responsible for ensuring safe playing and practice surfaces for Division I athletes. Responsible for determining sod replacement, scheduling of fertilization, irrigation, pesticide applications, mowing, and striping of practice and competition surfaces based on weather, athletic schedules and agronomic consideration.

Lead part-time and student workers in proper care and maintenance of on campus athletic fields, turf, grounds, and landscapes to ensure safe practice and playing surfaces for Division I athletes, along with aesthetically pleasing conditions.

Responsible for inventory, storage/organization, and proper usage of all supplies for day to day operations including fertilizers, pesticides, calcite clays, and cleaning supplies for assigned areas and athletic turf/grounds. Responsible for proper usage, and inventory of equipment for assigned areas.
