Director of Cardiac MR, Associate or Full Professor

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Oct 14, 2021
Deadline: Oct 14, 2023 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure clinician educator track. The primary faculty appointment will be in the Medicine or Radiology department, whichever is consistent with the scientific expertise of the successful candidate. Opportunity for joint recruitment or a secondary academic appointment will be determined between the two departments. Expertise is required in the specific area of Cardiac MR, with at least five years of clinical, research and educational experience. Applicants must have an M.D. or equivalent degree. US Board Certification in Cardiovascular Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, or equivalent, level III training in cardiac MR is required.

Teaching responsibilities may include educating clinical and research faculty, fellows, residents, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and technologists in high quality cardiac MR acquisition and interpretation according to the latest guidelines and research. The candidate will participate in developing multimodality cardiac imaging training programs and expanding the outreach and educational reputation of the cardiac MR program.

Clinical responsibilities may include supervising and interpreting cardiac MRIs, including stress MRIs. Participating in the design and implementation of cardiac MRI protocols and reports. Optimizing the quality of MRIs at all sites at the UPHS enterprise.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include participating in local, regional, national and international scientific efforts, collaborating on research projects, and supervising the research directions of the cardiac MRI laboratory. Conducting independent investigations and independent funding are strengths.

Penn Medicine is looking for a candidate who will further develop a forward looking, academic, and collaborative program in cardiac MR.

The candidate will supervise the multicenter enterprise-wide cardiac MR service at Penn Medicine, which is a joint program of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiothoracic Radiology. The rapidly growing service performed over 2500 clinical CMR exams in FY2021, analyzed by dedicated 3D and Advanced Imaging technologists, and interpreted by 10 level III trained cardiologists and radiologists. Imaging for electrophysiology is a particular area of clinical and research excellence, with one of the largest programs in the world for MR imaging of patients with implanted devices. The candidate will be charged with further developing and expanding the clinical CMR service, and implementing both quality improvement initiatives and innovative methods of care delivery, therefore experience in team or program management is helpful. Proficiency in other cardiac imaging modalities would be useful but is not mandatory.

Penn offers unique opportunities to integrate basic, translational, and clinical research, bioengineering and chemistry in a unified campus. There are whole body MR systems dedicated to research at 1.5, 3, and 7 Tesla in addition to numerous small and large animal MR, CT, and PET systems. Innovative technologies available include hyperpolarized gases and photon counting CT, along with dedicated physics support. Investigators in the Department of Radiology and the Penn Cardiovascular Institute have extensive research collaborations with CMR faculty. The ideal candidate will have a dedicated field of research in CMR, and will have experience with federal or large foundation funding, as a PI or co-I. One mission of the director of cardiac MR will be to expand research collaborations both within and outside the CMR group.

There will be an expectation of the ability of the selected candidate to provide management and/or leadership. Essential qualities include enthusiasm, drive, collaborative spirit, and a passion to develop a truly cross-disciplinary program if excellence in cardiac MR. Rank will be commensurate with experience.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
