Job Summary

You will join our food science team in a newly renovated laboratory at UMass Amherst (https://www.foodsci.umass.edu/). The position is linked to a 2-year fully funded research project that you will work on. The project aims to better understand protein extrusion processing and improve its sustainability for the production of plant-based meat alternatives.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Independently carrying out research on extrusion processing and protein extraction as well as characterization.
  • Writing publications, reports, and presenting results at conferences.
  • Supporting the organization of the laboratory.
  • Working together with students and professors in a creative and supporting environment.
  • Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • PhD degree in food science, nutritional science, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • Proven publication track-record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in working with processing equipment, food material, and food analytical equipment (rheometer, spectrophotometers, HPLC, etc.).
  • It would be desirable if you already have experience in extrusion processing, protein characterization, and protein extraction.
  • Desirable start date: Beginning of January 2022 +/- 1 month.

    Fully funded Postdoc position on extrusion processing for anisotropic protein structure formation.

    Work Schedule

    Monday – Friday, 8:30 – 5pm, 40 hours a week, 100% FTE. Some nights and weekends might be necessary.

    Salary Information

    Salary will commensurate with experience.
