The School of Law has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Asst. Dean, Career Services to work in the Coral Gables Campus.

Reporting to the Dean of University of Miami School of Law, the Assistant Dean of Career Development oversees the Career Development Office (CDO), which provides career planning support to Miami Law students and alumni. The Assistant Dean is responsible for establishing the strategic direction for all key aspects of the office’s mission, which includes career advising, internal and external communication, and programming. The Assistant Dean develops relationships with student and alumni, and represents the law school to external constituencies, including members of the legal community, potential employers, and the public.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Cultivates relationships with potential employers and coordinates networking events. Works with faculty, staff, and administrators to coordinate career placement efforts. Mentors students and orchestrates career services activities such as mock interviews. Develops a structured, strategic, professional development program to ensure students meet their career goals. Establishes and implements annual goals for the career planning and placement functions. Oversees the collection of graduate employment data. Maintains graduate employment records and completes related forms. Oversees the daily function of the assigned division, including the supervision of staff members. Administers department budget and monitors expenses to ensure compliance. Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements, and monitors controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage comprehensive career services to all J.D. and LL.M. students and alumni. Develop best practices for individualized career advising, communication, and broader programming in accordance with the needs of the student population. Reassess services and resources based on annual outcomes and evaluations.

  • Oversee marketing strategies for promoting law students and alumni. Engage with employers who recruit Miami Law candidates through its recruiting programs and other initiatives. Cultivate relationship with new employers to create additional employment opportunities in new markets, areas of practice, and industries.

  • Oversee the reporting of employment and other data to key organizations and publications, including the American Bar Association, NALP, US News and World Report, and Princeton Review. Use data collected to inform marketing, recruitment, communication, advising, and other initiatives.

  • Collaborate and develop strategic internal partnerships with various law school departments, including student affairs, admissions, and development.

  • Provide reports to and represent office at law school alumni committee meetings. Prepare presentations for other constituencies as necessary, including Visiting Committee and Board of Trustees.

  • Responsible for hiring and supervising professional staff, administrative staff, and student workers. Conduct regularly scheduled staff meeting to ensure progression of initiatives, identify challenges, solicit feedback, and monitor workflow. Conduct annual review and evaluation of staff.

  • Manage large, diverse team effectively and cultivate a positive team dynamic. Provide clear direction, training, feedback, mentoring, and opportunities for professional development.

  • Engage with professional organizations, including NALP and its state/local affiliate groups, local and state bar associations, and organizations committed to diversity in the legal industry.

  • Manage administration of the office, including overseeing office budget.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school and minimum 5 years of relevant work experience; prior legal experience or career services experience highly desired. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrate integrity, dependability, sound judgment, teambuilding, and resourcefulness to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with multiple diverse constituency groups. Must possess considerable understanding of legal/judicial system.

  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
