The Building for Wellbeing Lab

The Building for Wellbeing Lab is a collaborative team of researchers with projects spanning the study of physical and digital spaces and their impact on worker wellbeing and senior living to the exploration of the ways in which the built environment impacts community wellbeing and social acceptance of affordable housing. We seek a new team member who enjoys team-science and engineering and would thrive in a dynamic, curious, and team-oriented environment. Our projects span multiple schools and centers at Stanford University as well as external collaborations with other universities and municipal and non-profit partners. This environment provides many professional growth opportunities in academia and beyond for those with interests in social impact.

The Building for Wellbeing Lab seeks a Research Manager with a vision for the design of our built environment to foster human wellbeing supported by social science and engineering research. The ideal candidate will have the skills and experience to build the necessary partnerships to actualize this vision. The candidate should also have strong experience in collecting, analyzing and/or synthesizing data from a variety of sources and have experience using quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques in applied research. This position could be structured as a research scientist or postdoctoral fellowship depending on the candidate's interests and ideal career trajectory. This position reports to the Lab's faculty director.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs. Conduct research that supports and expands the impact of projects conducted in the Lab.
  • Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
  • Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
  • Advise and mentor students and affiliated research and evaluation staff. May be opportunities for teaching and course development.
  • Present research and represent the Lab at relevant conferences and participate in relevant programming on campus. Contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising.


Education & Experience (Required)
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.


Education & Experience (Desired)
  • There is a strong desire for candidates with a doctoral degree in the social sciences or in engineering collaborating with social scientists, and five to seven years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. Interested candidates could be appointed as postdoctoral scholars.
  • Experience working in or a degree related to a built environment profession
  • Expertise in web-development.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Required)
  • Experience in planning, designing, conducting, and managing research involving experimental psychology, sociology, or human factors, including the ability to work with human subjects.
  • Exceptional technical skills spanning data science and statistics with knowledge in the built environment (e.g., civil engineering, urban planning, architecture).
  • Experience and interest working in interdisciplinary groups and with partners in nonprofits, municipalities, and developers.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and communications skills
  • A self-starter, comfortable with autonomy, and able to drive initiatives to completion.
  • Creative, self-motivated, able to identify research opportunities.
  • Strong writing skills with ability to publish in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Experience with NVivo or Atlas.ti software.
  • Experience using statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS and Python.


Certifications and Licenses:
  • For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • On-campus mobility.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
