Job Description:


Summary of Position:
The Manager of Accounting and Financial Reporting is responsible for assisting with the overall accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting operations of the College including: generation of complex accounting entries, management of general ledger reconciliation, audit and financial statement preparation, IRS 990 tax return preparation and other tax filings, budget development, financial reporting and analysis, regulatory, GAAP and tax compliance in support of the financial and business service functions of the College.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Perform accounting, analysis, reporting and audit preparation, in areas such as: investments, deferred gift funds, loan funds, plant funds and endowment funds.
  • Assist in researching tax issues and in assuring College tax compliance including preparation of the annual 990 tax return and other regulatory filings.
  • Assist in the management of the annual audit process, including providing necessary data and analysis to auditors.
  • Assist in the development and management of the annual college operating budget, including performing analysis and projections and communicating with college management.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of internal managerial reporting and analysis including working with college management to identify reporting needs.
  • Assist departments with budget questions and financial reporting as needed.
  • Oversee the general ledger reconciliation process to ensure accuracy of financial statements.
  • Assist in monthly, year-end and ad-hoc financial reporting and analysis.
  • Coordinate monthly and year-end closings.
  • Establish and maintain financial systems and controls which ensure the integrity of all systems, processes and data.
  • Supervise GL accountant and review the monthly reconciliations and journal entries prepared by the accountant.
  • Document procedures & internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory and College guidelines related to accounting transactions.
  • Assist in developing policies related to fiscal management as needed, and train personnel on policies and procedures.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Monthly/Quarterly reconciliations and journal entries related to vacation accrual, various bank accounts, investments, and capital projects
  • Annual filings of annuity statement to Department of Insurance, College property tax exemption claim, Environmental fee return, the State charitable registrations.
  • Assist Financial Aid Office in annual preparation of FISAP report.
  • Influence and manage positive and effective cross-functional relationships with co-workers, Department and Program Managers, vendors and students within a diverse multi-cultural environment.
  • Perform other projects/duties as needed.


Requirements:


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and standards, preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IRS compliance and reporting issues pertaining to private higher education institutions, including preparation of 990 tax returns.
  • Knowledge of integrated financial software packages with preference for Banner, a Ellucian Higher Education ERP.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and translating regulatory requirements into proposed new/revised policy and procedures.
  • Proven ability to remain flexible to accommodate changing operational needs.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, decision-making and analytical skills.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and MS Access.
  • Understanding of Departmental goals and how they fit with College-wide goals.
  • Exhibit strong customer service orientation for all levels of College constituencies and members of the public.
  • Take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Education and Training:


  • Bachelor's degree required in accounting, business, finance or related field.
  • CPA and auditing experience preferred.
  • 5+ years of proven high- level accounting technical experience including the areas of fund accounting, general ledger, investments, contribution & endowment accounting, and receivables, preferably in a private higher education setting.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
The incumbent will often spend long hours sitting at and using the computer to retrieve, enter, manage, and review data. Lengthy accounting and taxation guidelines must often be read and interpreted for application to the college's circumstances. Individuals within and outside the college need to be communicated with over email and on the phone regarding complex accounting and tax issues. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause stress.

This is a full-time exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience, includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, vacation and sick days, and, holidays.
