Position SummaryUniversity Information Services (UIS) provides technical services and enterprise applications to the University of Colorado campuses and the Office of the President. UIS is committed to excellence in customer service and technical expertise. Through the development of enterprise applications, UIS supports the University as a whole with systems used by students, faculty, human resources employees, finance employees, and others.

In order to support the University’s data warehouse, data integrations, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives, this role will be a key member of the University’s Data and Business Intelligence (BI) team and will serve as a data and BI subject matter expert. This position is accountable for Data and Solutions Architecture processes and efficiencies for multiple functional areas. This position supports educating the University on best practices for data and BI architecture and will lead the mentoring of other Data and BI team members, including the successful onboarding of any new employees on the team. This position also requires the ability to perform some of the tasks and duties of the Assistant Director of Data and BI when they are unavailable.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Data and Business Intelligence and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.

DutiesDuties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 

    Acts as a Data Warehouse and BI subject matter expert to lead work efforts internally and educate external stakeholdersConducts duties, including requirement gathering, solution architecture and design, data modeling, Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) design and development, system testing, documentation and production support with data sources such as CU’s PeopleSoft Student, HCM, Finance, InfoEd and Advancement systems. Partners with the Data and BI Business Analyst to collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and assist with User Acceptance TestingDesigns supportable solutions to satisfy customer needs and support CU’s long-term business goals via the creation of new Data Warehouse data marts and enhancements to existing data martsCreates conceptual, logical, and physical data models, supported by detailed data profiling and data analysisCreates and maintains source to target mappings across multiple domains at the UniversityCreates and maintains documents such as standards documents, high level architecture diagrams, technical specifications, etc.Allocates and delegates responsibilities among team membersEnsures effective working relationships within the Data and BI team and those with whom the team interactsPartners with developers and production services to ensure the correct job scheduling is in place Assist with investigation of data, process, performance, logic or scheduling issues to identify the root causes, mitigation and resolution plansParticipates in technology projects and initiatives as a Technical Lead, partnering with the project manager to identify and track project plans, time estimates, cut over plans, resource availability, and communicationsLeads smaller initiatives, identifying and tracking project plans time estimates, cut over plans, resource availability, and communications Provides recommendations on data strategies, platforms, and application infrastructure required to implement solutionsAssists with design of a multi-year data warehouse roadmap, balancing short- and long-term goals and investments to scale and deliver enterprise-wide solutions and fulfill the organization's high-level reporting & analytics needsFacilitates and participates in peer design, code, testing and deployment reviewsReviews ETL job designs and report performance to provide developers and DBAs tuning guidance Works with BI team to design and implement data models in the CU System supported reporting tools Tableau and CognosContinues education and professional development including attending trainings and conferences and self-directed learning
Who we are: System Administration, which also houses the Office of the President, is located in the uptown neighborhood of Denver with a few smaller offices located on the campuses.  However, this position has the ability to work remotely. Many of our departments support the educational and research missions of the four University of Colorado campuses, but System Administration is not considered a campus. What we offer:

Salary: The anticipated hiring salary range has been established at $105,000 - $116,900.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or anticipated hiring salary range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. A combination of education, technology training and industry certifications, and related experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • Five (5) years of experience to include the following:ETL Development Tools
  • Data and BI Architecture including Kimball methodologies including star schema design, and accumulating and periodic snapshotsSQL, including Oracle analytic functions and techniques for tuning large-volume queries
Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor’s or post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, information technology, or field of study related to the work performed
  • Seven (7) years’ equivalent experience to include the following:
  • ETL Development Tools
  • Data and BI Architecture including Kimball methodologies including star schema design, and accumulating and periodic snapshots
  • SQL, including Oracle analytic functions and techniques for tuning large-volume queries
  • Two (2) years of experience in a team lead or supervisory role, which includes assigning and reviewing the work of others, providing guidance to internal and external team members, and assisting management with performance reviews (this requirement may be substituted by formal leadership training)
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
      Commitment to SDLC best practices as they relate to data warehousing and BIExperience working in a Linux environment and with shell scripting (Perl/Korn)Technical Lead experience managing a development team responsible for the design, development and implementation of highly complex programs, scripts, data objects resulting in high quality and performanceHigher educationJava and PL/SQL programmingPeopleSoft data models including Campus Solutions, Finance, and/or HCM version 9.0 or higherAdministration of an ETL or middleware tool (DataStage, ODI, Informatica, OSB, etc.)One or more projects to implement an ETL, information management tool, and/or data catalog
