Job Summary:

As a member of the anesthesia technician team, this individual will provide anesthesia and sedation to patients undergoing various procedures/diagnostics in the OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital and will teach and supervise senior veterinary students in clinical anesthesia (large and small animals). This individual will rotate with the other team members to provide after hour anesthesia emergency on-call duty for both large and small animal cases (including week nights, weekends, and holidays). Maintains cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia induction areas and equipment, responsible for supplies inventory and anesthesia equipment maintenance. Supervision of the service is provided by two board certified anesthesiologists.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

Promotional opportunities may be available through the established career development plan for anesthesia technicians.

Employee must be available after hours on a pre-scheduled basis for emergency duty. Compensation for after hours technical assistance complies with university stand-by and call-in compensation policy.

Exposure to animal diseases that may be transmitted to humans. Subject to animal scratches or bites. Potential for injury when dealing with aggressive or fractious large animals. Exposed to chemicals, anesthetic agents and pharmaceuticals used in treatment of animals. Mandatory rabies pre-exposure vaccination program. Exposure medical waste, animal feces, urine, blood and vomitus. Exposure to hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic drugs. Loud noises related to large and small animals are routine.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate Degree Veterinary Technology

Any level of experience will be considered as long as the
candidate is a licensed veterinary technician in the State of Oklahoma or will obtain licensure within 120 days of employment.

Registered Veterinary Technician or eligible for licensure in State of Oklahoma.

Experience in animal restraint, administering injections, and
placement of peripheral IV catheters is essential. Knowledge of basic pharmacology and physiology, calculating drug dosages and rates, administering anesthesia, assessing patient monitoring and addressing changes in patient status under anesthesia and during recovery. Knowledge of equipment used in VMH including, but not limited to: anesthesia equipment, monitoring equipment, diagnostic lab equipment, personal computer, etc.

This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally. Must be physically capable of lifting animals weighing 50 pounds or greater onto exam tables and into elevated cages.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of experience as Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition.

Advanced anesthesia techniques/skills in both large and small animals.
