Assistant/Associate Professor of Professional Practice - Tourism, Community, and Economic Development

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) within the Spears School of Business (SSB) at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a non-tenure-track, nine-month, faculty position in Tourism, Community, and Economic Development at the level of Assistant/Associate Professor of Professional Practice. The primary responsibilities for this position include teaching, conduct applied research, engage in grant writing, develop training programs, and robust service outreach to communities, government agencies, and relevant industry sectors. This position is located on the Stillwater campus. In addition to a competitive benefits package, the salary is commensurate with candidate qualifications and experience. This 9-month position has a preferred start date of August 2022.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. degree in tourism, hospitality management, or a closely related field is required at time of appointment. A minimum of five years of managerial experience in the industry and/or university teaching (undergraduate and/or graduate level), grant writing and service outreach activities related to tourism and hospitality management is required. Evidence of employment eligibility in the United States is required.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals with proven successful experience working with communities, government agencies, and industry. Ability to work effectively with students, co-workers, and administrative personnel, and external stakeholders should be demonstrated. Leadership to manage funded projects, team members, and liaison to funding agencies is expected.

RESPONSIBILITIES

·Teach undergraduate and graduate courses within tourism management, and other related areas as needed.

·Develop and deliver courses in the online/hybrid format based on the school’s needs.

·Deliver quality mentorship and advisement for undergraduate students.

·Actively pursue extramural funding (i.e., state and federal agencies) for applied research and outreach.

·Develop collaborative partnership in outreach activities (e.g., training programs) with communities, government agencies, and relevant industry sectors.

·Work cooperatively with academic units on campus located within multiple Colleges.

·Advise student organizations, serve on committees, participate in faculty and curriculum development, and assume other responsibilities normally associated with a clinical faculty position at a land grant university.

·Participate in the school’s effort in advancing scholarship through instruction, outreach, and other activities.

·Work closely with HTM’s two Centers (Wayne Hirst Center for Beverage Education, and Center for Hospitality and Tourism Research) to advance strategic goals in relation to applied research and extension.

·Disseminate results of scholarship by engaging with industry partners, governments, and professionals through appropriate media (e.g., trade publications, newsletters, electronic media, and speaking engagements).

·Ability to work effectively with co-workers, administrative personnel, and industry stakeholders.

·Provide service to HTM, SSB, and OSU.

ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has existed for over 80 years, making it one of the oldest such schools in the nation with a long tradition of success in serving the various segments of the hospitality industry. It has evolved into a business-focused, high-caliber academic program. The bachelor’s degree is in Business Administration with a concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management. The School also hosts a number of signature events that draw individuals and alumni from across the country to campus. HTM has nine tenure track faculty, five instructors or assistant professors of professional practice, and staff with significant industry experience who enrich the academic experience. The mission of the School is to provide superior learning, applications, research service, and outreach in a professional and caring environment. The mission is accomplished through excellence in the delivery of theoretical constructs in classroom supported practical experiences in state-of-the-art teaching laboratories; focusing on quality, innovation, and industry- based applications at all educational levels; and working closely with hospitality industry professionals to integrate current events and future trends into the curriculum. The School has consistently been ranked as a top 15 HTM program in the United States in Global Rankings.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is one of eight departments in the Spears School of Business. Spears is AACSB accredited and one of the largest and most successful units at OSU and offers a full range of academic programs at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. Spears School of Business actively supports students and faculty with a variety of resources including: the Eastin Center for Career Readiness, the CAGLE Center for Study Abroad, the Center for Executive and Professional Development, and significant resources dedicated to the development and delivery of on-line curricula.
