Postdoctoral Investigator

School for Marine Science and Technology

The School for Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a postdoctoral investigator to work on problems relating to the effects of turbulence, aerosols, and other atmospheric parameters on optical transmission in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Specific project areas include field observations from fixed, autonomous and shipboard platforms, and state-of-the-art numerical modeling of how fluctuating properties of the marine boundary layer affect optical transmission. Work will include collecting and interpreting field observations using theory and numerical results; analyzing and synthesizing data from such studies; working with researchers from collaborating institutions; and disseminating results through workshops, conference presentations, and peer reviewed publications.

Initial appointment will be for up to 12 months. Renewals will be contingent on performance and availability of funding.

A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or meteorology, or closely related field is required. The ideal candidate will have a firm understanding of basic principles of air-sea interaction, with significant education/experience in boundary layer physics and/or turbulence. Additional experience in numerical modeling and data analysis preferred, including familiarity with Matlab computing software and programming languages such as Fortran, Python, C++, R, etc. Applicants are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational ability, and a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with experience. ABD's may be considered, however, the degree would need to be completed/confirmed by 12/30/2022.

Interested applicants that meet the requirements are encouraged to review the SMAST Code of Conduct and Diversity Statement (https://www.umassd.edu/media/umassdartmouth/smast/lab-pdf-files/SMAST-Code-of-Conduct-and-Diversity-Statement.pdf).

To apply please submit a letter of interest, current resume and the contact information for three professional references.

Initial review of applications will begin immediately.

UMass Dartmouth offers a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate degrees vital to the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the region. It has an enrollment of over 9,200 students in over 40 undergraduate and 36 graduate programs (including 11 at the Ph.D. level) offered by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Charlton College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing, the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School for Marine Science and Technology. The main campus was designed by the eminent architect Paul Rudolf and is located on 710 acres in North Dartmouth. Other university sites include theCenter for Marine Science and Technology on the waterfront in New Bedford, the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center in Fall River and the Star Store Center for the Arts in New Bedford.

While retaining its commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, UMass Dartmouth has increased dramatically its research and outreach activities during the past ten years. R&D spending has increased in the last five years from $20.1 million to $25.6 million and the university has established centers in Policy Studies, Portuguese Studies & Culture, Business Research, Marine Science &Technology and Indic Studies to significantly expand its research and public service activities in ways that meet regional needs but have global impact.
