Rate of Pay:

This position is a grade 15 with a minimum of $56,925. Salary offer will be commensurate with the education/experience, in alignment with the College’s compensation philosophy, and the current CBA, if applicable.

Job Summary:

An employee in this classification performs work of considerable difficulty by providing technical training and user support for faculty, staff, and students regarding accessibility in compliance with all applicable laws, including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and faculty support in instructional technology/design. Work is distinguished by the ability to utilize technologies to remediate the accessibility issues within digital materials, including but not limited to Microsoft Office products, Google Suite products, videos, and other multimedia, and will coordinate efforts to remediate accessibility issues related to instruction.

Direction is received by the assigned manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology, Education, Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development/Design, or other related field, or a Bachelor’s degree with an equivalent combination of training and experience related to accessibility and digital documents or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Good knowledge of instructional design, and experience with the development of learning environments utilizing online technologies and working with Subject Matter Experts
  • Some knowledge using a learning management system (LMS).
  • Some knowledge with the development of accessible courses that are technology-enhanced, hybrid, or fully online.
  • Considerable skill in organizing work to meet established deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Working skills in analyzing and remediating digital materials and products for accessibility issues in compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 success criteria and Section 508 standards.
  • Working skills in Universal Design for Learning, accessibility practices, inclusive design, and equity in instruction. Strong understanding of accessibility barriers in various technologies and methods to remove those barriers.
  • Working skills in assistive technology, including but not limited to screen reading software (e.g., JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), screen magnification software (e.g., ZoomText), speech-to-text software (e.g., Dragon Naturally Speaking), text-to-speech software (e.g., Kurzweil), and keyboard-only software.
  • Working skills in Automated Accessibility Testing and accessibility plug-ins.
  • Working skills in developing courses that are technology-enhanced, hybrid, or fully online;
  • Working skills in HTML, CSS, Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook), Google Suite (i.e., Docs, Slides, Sheets), and PDF remediation software (i.e., CommonLook, Codemantra), Adobe Acrobat Pro, captioning and audio description software, etc.
  • Working skill in interpersonal interaction to be applied to a variety of individuals with differing education, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Working skills in public speaking and providing workshops and online learning opportunities to instructors and students related to accessibility of LMS, digital materials, and other technology in online and traditional learning environments.
  • Working skills in developing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department.
  • Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    1. Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Education, Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development/Design, or related field.
    2. Certified Professional in Web Accessibility.
    3. Some knowledge of working within a union environment.

    Essential Duties:

    1. Utilize PDF remediation software and accessibility checkers to audit the accessibility of and remediate digital materials, and train instructors, staff, administrators, and student workers in creating accessible digital materials for instructional use.
    2. Provide technology support to instructors related to the accessibility of instructional development and provide consultation regarding the selection and implementation of accessible products in pedagogical environments and the creation of multi-media materials. Support and assist students, instructors and members of the community on a daily basis to answer questions and address issues related to the accessibility and technical support of online, hybrid, and enhanced courses, and technology in the classroom. Respond to requests for assistance from instructors, students, and staff; resolve and follow-up on requests related to D2L and other technology enhanced environments. Consult with instructors on instructional design issues related to developing effective learning environments;
    3. In collaboration with the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), provide workshops and online learning opportunities to instructors and students related to accessibility of LMS, digital materials, and other technology in online and traditional learning environments. Create instructional materials explaining the process to remediate digital materials in compliance with WCAG 2.1 success criteria and Section 508 standards
    4. Assist with recruitment, hiring, and supervision of student workers, and coordinate the training for student workers in the remediation of digital materials.
    5. Participate in Departmental initiatives as an instructional technologist, representing the department and serving as a resource for other departments on campus as it relates to technology enhanced and online learning.
    6. Test, evaluate, recommend, implement, and pilot new and emerging technologies that enhance accessible instruction. Consult with vendors of accessibility and assistive technologies in selecting accessible products and troubleshooting accessibility compliance issues and barriers.
    7. Track remediation (files, courses, other pertinent information) and report on progress of accessibility remediation project on campus.
    8. Ability to be able to work independently, conferring with supervisor as needed.
    9. Ability to work under deadlines, plan, organize, and execute multiple and continuing assignments.
    10. Participate in departmental strategic planning, including its function, operation, and budgetary issues, departmental improvement and expanding services.
    11. Maintain required training, licensure and/or certification.
    12. Maintain confidentiality of privileged information and adhere to applicable privacy laws.
    13. Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and respect of diverse populations within the workplace.
    14. Maintain an understanding of the work of colleagues to effectively provide backup and/or support for co-workers during times when the department is short-staffed or experiencing an increased volume of work.
    15. Adhere to department guidelines for attendance and punctuality.
